Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Center & Monastery, Kansas City, Mo.: Buddhism is a non theistic reli- gion, therefore prayers are not directed to a supreme being. Yet, all of us have wishes or aspirations that are often manifested through prayers. From the Buddhist perspective, prayers rely upon NO LAUNDRY LISTS our own inner power and innate basic goodness. Too often prayers are a mere laundry list of our material desires that reinforces our clinging and grasping at things we mistakenly think will bring us happiness. At its most fundamental level, prayer is a form of energy that helps us connect to our inner conscious- ness, while also connecting us with the vast web of interdependence. In Thich Nhat Hanh's book "The Energy of Prayer," Larry Dossey in the introduction says, "For what is prayer but communication with the Absolute, from whence we arose, with whom we are connected, and to whom we shall return?" If prayer is a bridge to the Absolute, then our prayer should have the energy of faith, compassion and love. Thich Nhat Hanh says, "If our prayer lacks these elements then it is like trying to use a telephone when there is no electricity in the wire. The mere fact that we pray doesn't lead to a result." Leonard Ravenhill stands as one of the premier thinkers behind the Jesus People movement of the late sixties and seventies. The Jesus People rocked the world and stands as the enduring legacy of the Boomer Generation – a far more dynamic legacy than would be expected from a generation charac- terized as pot-smokers obsessed with self by those who know only how to accuse and dismiss those who are different. The Jesus Peo- ple went from beach to city to mis- sion field in ceaseless searching for people who needed Jesus; they knew no other priority. Ravenhill said of the larger Body of Christ that the only reason we do not have ongoing revival is because we are content to live without it. The Jesus People were not so content. And that brings us to Pentecost. Pentecost means harvest. On Therefore, prayer has the potential to transform us. It can transform us from the grasping and cling- ing to material possessions to connecting us with the transcendent Absolute. This is the primary advantage. It's a privilege to be able to address God on behalf of self and others. A prayer-praise is given by the psalmist when he said, "I entreated thy favor with my whole heart" (Psalm 119:58a). He taught these words, "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." (Matthew 6:13a) Prayer is used as spiritual warfare against moral weakness. Jesus said: "Watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Matthew 26:41). The Bible makes prayer a constant. The lessons are to pray always in the Spirit (Ephesians 6:18), and to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). With emphasis, heaven makes prayer faith dogma with such words as "Men ought always to pray and not give up (Luke 18:1b)." As such, praying is more than a body position, but a condition of mind and spirit. The advantage and the freedom to pray are con- stantly with us. The meaning of a thing is greater than the thing itself. The meaning of prayer is greater than the word itself. A sincere prayer habit on a daily basis energizes the human spirit. The tongues described in Acts 2 were the fireworks but it is the people themselves, now filled with a Spir- it who empowers the Great Com- mission, stepping out to begin a ceaseless search for people who need Jesus; they know no other pri- ority. It is a seminal moment. Three thousand come to know Christ through their ministry that day; the infant Church doubles in size the next day and the move- ment proceeds into today and the two-point-three-billion-member Body to which we belong. Peter called Pentecost the fulfillment of Joel 2:28 in which the Spirit would be poured out on all flesh, even though three thousand in one morning – impressive as it is – would hardly be comparable to all flesh. Peter can only be speaking the truth if God is launching an unfolding process that finds its completion in that (then) future moment when all flesh will indeed be filled with the Spirit of the Liv- ing God – one invitation and one decision at a time. But that means Pente- cost is not so much an his- torical event as a progres- sive drama of His King- dom coming and His will being done. It also means that the reason for being in each of us who call Jesus Lord is to play the part He assigns to us in this mag- nificent outpouring. It is not about tongues, although they facilitate witness. It is not about signs and wonders, although they grab attention – our and the world's. It is about making disci- ples by any means He makes avail- able, teaching one another all that He commands, and relying on His life-giving presence every moment of our lives – individually and cor- porately. Our winsome- ness comes from the practice of a life of pro- gressive turning toward Jesus as the only source and model of every move we make. It means – finally – that when we consider the amazing empow- erment we are given in the Holy Spirit – regardless of whether we think of ourselves as charismatics, evangelicals, or mainline Chris- tians – the only reason we can assign to not having invited every member of the human race into the Kingdom and watching most so astounded at the life of victory they see in their neighbors – is that we are content to live lives other than the one for which we are cre- ated.
