Dress Up your beach cooler with one of our CUSTOM COOLER SLEEVES! Imagine what life would be like if you could not see the sunset or the face of the love of your life. For many individuals this is reality. Raising awareness and making a differ- ence for the visually inpaired is importan to The Vision Resource Centers, and it is why The Vision Resource Center will present Out of Sight Wing Fling on Saturday, May 7 at J. P. Riddle Stadium from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. "Our event is actually a chicken wing com- petition," said Terri Thomas, executive direc- tor of The Vision Resource Center. "We will have 10 competitors who will fry chicken wings with their special seasonings and the public will vote on which one is the best by using an app." Thomas added that the two awards that will be given are Most Creative Wings and the People's Choice Wings. The judges will vote for Most Creative Wings and the public will vote for People's Choice Wings. The event is a celebration of food, fellowship and community. There will be food trucks, vendors, a live band, a kids' zone, live DJ and the Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin' Challenge. "Buffalo Wild Wings has this super, su- per hot sauce that they do not sell in the restaurant," said Thomas. "Participants will pay a fee to register and eat six of these super-hot sauce chicken wings to win a prize from Buffalo Wild Wings." Proceeds will be used to support the Vision Resource Center's visually impaired adults and children living in the Cape Fear Re- gion. Many blind people are not sociable so Thomas makes sure they enjoy activities such as shopping, horseback riding, surfing, watching plays, rock climbing and many other activities. "We had a meeting and they told me that they wanted more classes about independent living skills," said Thomas. "Everything we take for granted such as cooking, putting our clothes on, walking around the house and other activities are not easy for the visually impaired or blind person." Thomas added that they had provided a small scale of indepen- dent living skills but it was not enough. For instance, they were taught how to use a crock pot at home for cooking. They would go up individually with the teacher to learn tips about how to use the crock pot, but when they went home they did not have a crock pot to use. An orientation specialist, special ap- paratuses to help them see and navigate, and other items are needed to help the visually impaired and these items come at a hefty price. "We are trying to get enough items for our program so we can loan them out," said Thomas. "I need to go out and do outreach to find out what they need in the home and take it to them because they will not come to the cen- ter." Thomas added that some visually impaired individ- uals are depressed and want to commit suicide. She wants to make sure that they are sociable and have lots of fun. "This is our first time doing this and it is more of a family fun kind of event," said Thomas. "Please come out and support the blind of Cumberland County." The cost is $5 for general admission, $3 for seniors and the military and $2 for kids under 13. For more information, visit www.outofsigh- twingf ling.com or call 483-2719.
