BENEFIT FOR
STAN STEWART
Janice Voter
has worked at
Fayetteville Urban
Ministry for 18
years. Every year
she looks forward
to the Wingmen
Toy Run that brings
Christmas gifts for
local underprivileged
children. It's some
-
thing the Wingmen
have been doing for
34 years.
"When you see these big burly bikers riding up with stuffed toys and
dolls and games on their bikes, it's quite a sight," she said. "When you look
at these bikers, they can seem so intimidating, but their hearts are as soft
as the stuffed teddy bears they bring for the kids … They bring hundreds
of toys every year. They have helped make Christmas special for thousands
and thousands of kids in our community."
Every year, Voter brings her
camera and takes pictures as the
motorcycles roll through town
to deliver gifts for Fayetteville
Urban Ministry to distribute. "I
had stacks and stacks of pictures
of these toy runs and they were
sitting in boxes at my house," she
said. "So I started thinking about
something meaningful that I could
do with them."
It didn't take long for Voter to
realize that she was holding a
gold mine of Wingmen history.
It only seemed right to share it
with the bikers who have given
so selflessly to the children of
the community for three-and-
a-half decades. She could have
just taken the photos to the group's clubhouse and dropped them off, but
after all the years
of commitment, the
memories, the unwav
-
ering dedication of
the bikers, Voter knew
they deserved better.
Inspired by the bikers
and their generosity,
Voter spent hours and
hours sorting through
the photographs, hav
-
ing them enlarged and
thoughtfully laying
them out to create
a photo album that
Mayor Nat Robertson and Fayetteville Urban Ministry will present to the
Wingmen on April 30 at Legends Pub.
"Knowing that the mayor rides, it just made sense for him to be the one
to present this," said Voter.
The presentation begins at 2 p.m.
