APRIL 27 - MAY 3, 2016 UCW 17 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM During the summer of 2015, Fayetteville Technical Community College offi- cially opened the Student Advising and Retention Center now located in the newly-renovated Tony Rand Student Center. Manned by faculty and staff members who have a variety of experiences rang - ing from classroom instruction to backgrounds in business and career coaching, the center offers supe- rior academic support focused on helping students accomplish personal and professional goals. With an enrollment of nearly 14,000 first-time and returning students, FTCC dedicates the Advising and Retention Center to helping students' achieve success. The cen - ter offers quality and caring support to all students, providing student assistance that includes but is not limited to tutorial, advising, early intervention, career and educational planning and mentoring ser - vices consistent with the following: evaluating stu- dent programs of study; advising and guiding in the planning and selection of classes to meet academic goals; providing resources for the student learning center, tutoring services, and points of contact for advisors, programs, and special persons of interest; assisting in navigating the FTCC website, Blackboard learning environment, Web Advisor and Student email; providing career coaching; provid - ing access to computer labs for use of registration, completing home work assign- ments and other college-related endeavors FTCC is also dedicated to serving active duty and veteran military students seeking to earn degrees. The center is staffed with trained military assessment retention specialists whose primary purpose is in guiding active duty and veteran military students through the enrollment and registration process. The center's staff advises students in following specific steps and guidelines and in utilizing government resources to become actively enrolled. The team at the center reviews students' files to ensure that Joint Service Transcripts are updated and student agreements and all required official documenta - tion (such as high school transcripts) are in place for efficient enrollment in GoArmyEd accounts. Military students can e-mail or call specialists with questions and can submit documents and make inquiries as well; all inquiries sent to the Center are answered within the same day. The Advising and Retention Center team also works with students seeking help to succeed in their classes. Students who are new to college or returning after a lengthy break are often under - prepared and lacking the study and time manage- ment skills necessary for success. This situation can cause students to become overwhelmed by workloads and course responsibilities. As these issues can ultimately escalate to problems with grades and attendance, instructors submit early alert notices to the Center to seek additional help for their students. When instructors submit early alert notices, staff members at the Center respond to students with email corre - spondence and phone calls. Staff members also provide valuable resource informa- tion and points of contact and connect students with trained individuals who can offer tutoring and teach them basic skills for success. Students served through the staff of the FTCC Advising and Retention Center can always expect excellent customer service from a team who truly cares about their success.
