Paige Pearce, 17, took second in the Nationals in the Senior Division and clinched the No. 1 posi- tion on the Senior World Team that will travel to Val d'lsere, France in August. In a Fita Field event, archers walk through the woods shooting paper targets at unknown distances at very steep angles. One of the steepest targets shot during a 3-D tour- nament in Redding is about 22 degrees. In a Fita Field tournament, the angles can be a steep as 80 degrees. "There was one tar- get where I had to har- ness in and lean over a cliff to shoot," Pearce said. "It was kind of scary and very tricky trying to figure out the distance to shoot the target because it was straight down at about 25 yards. The target was close to an 80 degree angle, so I think I actu- ally shot the target for about four yards." Most people think when shooting an uphill target, an archer must add yardage, when in actuality, she must cut yardage. D marked course, we use an instrument called an inclinometer to determine the angle degree of the hill," Pearce explained. "When we shoot a 3- example, let's say the target is 65 yards and the degree measure on the inclinometer is 15 degrees. my calculator and hit the cosine key and then multiply it by 65. The calculator tells me to shoot the target for 62.79 yards. There is a 2.21 cut on that target. It works the same if the target were downhill. An inclinometer and calculator cannot be used during a Fita Field, so it is all a guessing game." The Warriors, NBA Commissioner David Stern and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee officially announced Tuesday that the Bay Area's only NBA team will try to move back to scenic San Francisco. The earliest the team could leave Oakland would be 2017, when it can escape its lease at Oracle And with that, the fran- See SF, page 2B Posey homers in Giants win Courtesy photo Paige Pearce will travel with the senior team to France in August. The following day, archers shot 24 marked targets. to the final target. Van Natta gained on Pearce and ended up taking first by one point to win the Fita Field Nationals with a score of 785 with Pearce taking second with 784. Nancy Zorn took third with a score of 717. The top four archers moved on to the finals, where the top three would make Team USA and travel to France in August. Pearce took first with a final score of 966. Van Natta and Zorn chose not to compete for the World Team, so Hunter Jackson from Michigan, placed second with a score of 866 and will join Pearce in France. "The trip is self- funded and I wasn't sure I wanted to go," said Pearce, "but after doing so well on the challenging course, I DAILYNEWS RED BLUFF TEHAMACOUNTY ATHLETES OF THE SEASON Red Bluff Spartans Tennis Athletes of the Spring Season Twitchell Stan Our coach of the spring sports season is Red Bluff Spartans tennis coach Stan Twitchell.
