A vision formed in the hearts of Alex and Stephen Kendrick as they played with cameras in their backyard in Smyrna, Georgia, has grown into a world-wide movie min- istry. The movies "Fly- wheel", "Facing the Giants" and "Fireproof" are the realization of that vision through Sherwood Pictures, the unique film- making ministry of Sher- wood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. The Kendrick brothers, associ- ate pastors at Sherwood, had a lifelong dream to make movies. The themes and princi- ples framed in lead charac- ters and each storyline are based on the example set, and lessons learned from their father, Larry Kendrick. God is the hero in each film, as He works through people's lives. The message " God can overwhelm us with His goodness. When God is at the center, it impacts the rest of your life." When they were kids, their neighbor had a Super 8 film camera. "We played with that camera for two or three years until cam- corders came out," Alex said. "We created our own entertainment." Through trial and error, the brothers learned visual angles, editing, and even- tually began producing their own short movies. Alex majored in commu- nications at Kennesaw State University. After col- lege, the Kendrick broth- ers continued making short movies as the leaders of college student and teen ministries. Their produc- tions premiered at Sher- wood Baptist Church on makeshift screens of paper tablecloths. In 2002, Alex read an article citing a study by researcher George Barna that reported- movies have more influence over cur- rent society than any church; they are the most effective means of commu- nication to this generation. Alex proposed the church make a family- friendly movie that could be filmed affordably in Albany. "A huge segment of people love movies but leave theaters disappoint- ed in the profanity, immorality, and messages that trample their family's values and faith," Stephen said. Senior Pastor Michael Catt agreed, and the church created Sher- wood Pictures. Their first movie, "Fly- wheel" was filmed on video with a $20,000 bud- get that came from private contributions. Using an all-volunteer cast of actors, the movie utilized local homes and business- es as sets. The wardrobe department amounted to each actor's own closet. The camera crane, dolly, and steady cam equipment were built with supplies purchased from Home Depot. Several crises occurred during production, includ- ing loss of 30 minutes of edited film. "It became another opportunity to pray", recalled Alex. "The Lord can make a better movie than we can. We asked the Lord for creativ- ity, and to allow things to happen beyond what we had planned." After three weeks of around the clock re-film- ing, dubbing, and editing, the final com- pleted version of the film was burned to DVD on April 9, 2003, just seven hours, 30 min- utes before it premiered at their local Carmike Cine- mas theater! The over- w h e l m i n g response to " F l y w h e e l ' shocked the Kendrick broth- ers. They are still amazed the movie was ever complet- ed. The movie intended for a community outreach through their local theater has been viewed around the world. The next two films pro- duced were "Facing the Giants" 2006 and "Fire- proof" 2008. These pro- ductions were blessed with larger budgets, but as with "Flywheel", no actors were paid. The talents of cameraman, Bob Scott added to the production quality of these films. Scott, whose film cred- its include the "Bourne Ultimatum", was impressed with the unified effort on set. Everyone gathered to start and end filming each day. "The atti- tude was 'do whatever it takes' to get the movie made. This just doesn't happen in the movie busi- ness. It was great to be at work each day", said Scott. "The formula that has worked for us is "seek the Lord first, ask Him to bless it'" said Stephen Kendrick. "Each film is a testimo- ny that God can use what we give Him, and our sin- cerity. He will multiply it for His glory. Our desire is to touch the world from Albany", said Executive Producer and Senior Pas- tor Michael Catt.- "We want to inspire other churches to find creative ways to reach people with the message that Jesus Christ loves each of them." S h e r w o o d Pictures has announced a fourth film: "Courageous". It will embrace God's promise to "turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and hearts of chil- dren to their f a t h e r s . " (Malachi 4:5,6) "Fireproof" is the story of a firefighter. "Coura- geous" will focus on four law enforcement officers. Fathers, wrestling with their hopes, their fears, and their faith in Christ. Called to serve and pro- tect, each faces danger on the streets, as well as daily challenges at home. Sherwood Pictures promises more action in "Courageous", beyond anything they have previ- ously attempted. The intent is to encourage men, as fathers, to rise up and be actively engaged in the lives of their children. The film will offer a challenge to be ... courageous! http://www.courageous- themovie.com. Rent each locally, or purchase at www.sher- woodpictures.com. Faiths uniting to help Haiti MIAMI (MCT) — Like many who lost family during the earthquake in Haiti, Jude Pierre turned to his faith for solace and wanted to find a way to help. On Saturday, Pierre, a Christian from Miramar, Fla., found himself among shouts of Arabic prayers as he packed boxes of canned goods in a Miami Gardens, Fla., ware- house, affixing stickers to packages that read "Muslim Americans Help Haiti." "I found out through a friend who sent me a link on Facebook," said Pierre, 21, who attended the Haiti volunteer day headed by local Muslim groups. "It was just another way to help." The earthquake has brought an outpouring of response from religious communities. While large-scale efforts among specific denominations have gotten much attention, many smaller faith groups have joined together for relief efforts. Leaders say faith commands them to help and when disaster hits, theological differences go out the door. Those working on relief include Scientologists, who flew a group from Miami to Port-au-Prince last week, and Mormons and Muslims, who have teamed to send supplies. "Some people think we should only work with our own, but our prophet said to work with all," said Sofian Abdelaz- iz Zakkout, head of American Muslims for Emergency and Relief, a North Miami Beach organization that organized Saturday's effort with the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Last week, the national Church of Scientology chartered a 168-seat aircraft from Miami International Airport to Port- au-Prince that carried doctors, Mormon volunteers and Sci- entology relief workers, including a handful from South Florida. "No matter what religion, what creed, it's our duty to help in situations like these," said Mercedes Alvarez, a Miami Scientologist who helped organize the effort. The flight included "volunteer ministers" who have been using Scientology physical therapy techniques to assist victims, but Alvarez said there were no plans to proselytize. On Friday, Tony Burns, who serves as an elder in South Florida's 15,000-member Mormon population, toured a warehouse of 160,000 pounds of tents and supplies his church headquarters in Salt Lake City was delivering from to Haiti via workers from Islamic Relief USA. "It's not what you may expect, but good people must come together to alleviate suffering," said Burns, who said he was interested in teaming with local Muslims.
