Adam Owens, a Red Bluff native and youngest of two sons born to Jerry and Jennifer Owens, has been around the sale his whole life as the great- grandson of Roy Owens, a founding member and presi- dent of the sale. Owens' grandfather Bill Owens was on the board of directors starting in 1953, retiring as president in 1986. His maternal grandfather, Norman Elston of Red Bluff, was a long-time cattle buyer throughout Northern Califor- nia and Nevada. A 2001 graduate of Califor- nia State University, Chico, Owens, who married Dena Dietle of Hamilton City in 2005 and has two children, Lucas and Olivia, said he is the fifth generation of ranchers to raise cattle in the Cottonwood and Red Bluff areas. Together with his brother Matt, Owens owns a commer- cial operation that operates in Tehama, Glenn, Lassen and Klamath counties, the latter being in southern Oregon. Owens first became involved in the sale by volun- teering as a stock judge in 2005 and was a consignor in 2006 before stepping up to the position of assistant manager in 2008. Anderson describes Owens as having a good work ethic and a progressive outlook on the cattle industry. "I could say a lot about Adam (Owens)," Anderson said. "He's a good man and he's got a lot of talent and abil- ity." Anderson, the manager 2001-2009, said he will remain involved in the sale, returning to the position of director, which he held for about 15 years before becom- ing manager. Anderson added a few things to the event, including a feeder and female replacement sale, which went live online at the 2009 sale. He took the stock dog con- test, previously held as the start to the bull sale, and turned it into a stand-alone event Friday night, Owens said. While Owens said he real- izes changes need to be made to an event over time, he has no plans for changes at this time. "Certainly as a first year manager I want to keep it the same as much as possible to understand how it works," Owens said. "The long-term goal is to keep the reputation of Red Bluff that's been estab- lished. The sale has a reputation of being the best consignment bull sale west of the Rockies. It's definitely a regional event with a major economic impact on the community." Owens said the event, which packs the Tehama Dis- trict Fairground and most of the hotels in town, brings buy- ers and consignors from places like Nevada, Texas and Ari- zona. "It brings people to Red Bluff from all over the western states," Owens said. "It also brings a lot of outside com- merce." While consignors show up as early as the Friday before the sale, which runs Jan. 26 through Jan. 30 this year, the process of getting ready is year-long, Owens said. "It's amazes people that the office is open all year round," Owens said. "I have a fantastic staff and volunteers who help keep things running." Staff keeps busy putting together and mailing catalogs for the bull, gelding and stock dog sales, signing up con- signors and fielding questions, Owens said. Physical preparations start by the second week of January with getting sawdust in the barns and about one week out putting panels in the barns and getting tents for the trade show up. The 2010 sale has 390 bulls, 153 geldings, five mules and 20 stock dogs lined up. "Red Bluff always has out- standing bulls," Owens said. "It's a place where buyers can come and know the bulls have been inspected for soundness and structure and have confi- dence in what they're buying. We also have a very good con- signment of geldings this year so I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of geldings in that same ballpark (as last year)." Last year's high selling gelding, owned by Jim DiDio of Red Bluff, sold for $39,000, which Owens described as far and away bigger than the last record — around $30,000. The 2010 sale will see the continuation of the online female replacement sale, which is viewable at www.wvmcattle.com at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28. One change will be the name of the bullride held Sat- urday evening from Blood and Guts to Red Bluff's Buckin' Best Bull Riding. Don Kish's Buckin' Best Bulls will con- tinue providing the bulls. Another addition is a kick- off breakfast on Tuesday, Jan. 26, Owens said. Information on the sale can be found at www.redbluffbull- sale.com or by calling 527- 2045. Tickets and catalogs can be purchased at the Bull & Geld- ing Sale Office, which sits near the front gate of the fair- ground, but moves to the Don Smith Pavilion the Thursday prior to the start of the sale. ——— Julie Zeeb can be reached at 527-2153, extension 115 or jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.co m.
