RED BLUFF DAILY NEWS • 527-2151 Web: redbluffdailynews.com E-Mail: advertise@redbluffdailynews.com Tuesday, January 26, 2010 – Daily News – 7B ODDS & ENDS Fla. man finds $3,100 hidden in trashed picture STUART, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man rescued a framed space shuttle photo from a trash bin — and found a wad of treasure in the process. Stuart Police say Warren Bendix was going to put the photo in a different frame and discovered $3,100 in cash stuffed behind the picture. He had found the picture while going through the trash near his apartment. Bendix reported his discovery to police on Saturday. Police say Bendix can claim the money if the owner doesn't turn up. Game over: Inmate can't play Dungeons & Dragons MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A man serving life in prison for first-degree intentional homicide lost his legal battle Monday to play Dungeons & Dragons behind bars. Kevin T. Singer filed a federal lawsuit against officials at Wisconsin's Waupun prison, arguing that a policy banning all Dungeons & Dragons material violated his free speech and due process rights. Prison officials instigated the Dungeons & Dragons ban among concerns that playing the game promoted gang-relat- ed activity and was a threat to security. Singer challenged the ban but the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Mon- day upheld it as a reasonable policy. Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures, often working together as a group, with the help of complicated rules. Singer, 33, has been a devoted player of the fantasy role- playing game since he was a child, according to the court ruling. After the ban went into effect, prison officials con- fiscated dozens of Dungeons & Dragons books and maga- zines in his cell as well as a 96-page manuscript he had writ- ten detailing a potential scenario for the game that players could act out. Prison officials enacted the ban in 2004 after an inmate sent an anonymous letter expressing concern about Singer and three other inmates forming a ''gang'' focused around playing the game. Singer was told by prison officials that he could not keep the materials because Dungeons & Dragons ''promotes fan- tasy role playing, competitive hostility, violence, addictive escape behaviors, and possible gambling,'' according to the ruling. The prison later developed a more comprehensive policy against all types of fantasy games, the court said. The appeals court said the prison's policy was reasonable and did not violate Singer's rights. ''After all, punishment is a fundamental aspect of impris- onment, and prisons may choose to punish inmates by pre- venting them from participating in some of their favorite recreations,'' the court said. Singer was sentenced to life in prison in 2002 after being found guilty of first-degree intentional homicide in the killing of his sister's boyfriend. The man was bludgeoned to death with a sledgehammer. Department of Corrections spokesman John Dipko said the department was pleased with the decision and will con- tinue to enforce rules that are designed to maintain a safe environment. Singer's court-appointed attorney, W.C. Turner Herbert of North Carolina, also did not immediately return a mes- sage seeking comment. Getting a cold one is no problem at Pa. ice bar DRUMS, Pa. (AP) — An one eastern Pennsylvania restaurant, getting a cold one is no problem: Everything is on ice — and under it, and surrounded by it. Damenti's Restaurant in Mountain Top has set up a tem- porary freestanding bar with a pirate theme in its backyard that is almost completely made of 50 tons of ice. To keep the ice from melting, air conditioning brings the mercury down to about 20 degrees. Owner Kevin McDonald says he's hoping the novelty will bring in the crowds. About 40 people can fit in the 480-square-foot structure. The decor includes a skull and crossbones that covers an entire wall and pirate motifs and sayings etched into the walls both inside and outside. A year later, questions still loom over Octomom LOS ANGELES (AP) — As her eight youngest children cele- brate their first birthday, ''Octo- mom'' Nadya Suleman has gone from a veiny-bellied expectant mom to a scantily clad model on the cover of a supermarket tabloid. ''My new bikini body! How I did it!'' exclaims the headline in this week's issue of Star Maga- zine. In the photo, she smiles and poses with a thumb crooked into her red bathing suit bottoms. A year after giving birth, the single, unemployed woman seems to have learned that one way to raise her 14 children is to exploit the celebrity media for attention and money that can be used to bring up her brood. ''Her narrative, her epic seems to be being told almost exclusively by the medium of tabloid print,'' said Syracuse University pop culture professor Robert Thompson. ''The little slices we see have not added up to much.'' Photo spreads, online videos and interviews in gossip sheets lean more toward promoting Suleman's image. The reports provide little insight into how she manages to raise her huge family and still find time to get buff and stay in the limelight. She breezes past the details, telling Star she only sleeps two hours a day, has three live-in nan- nies to help and has friends who sometimes take a child for sever- al days to ease her load. While she insists she's a good mother, gone are the days when the births of the world's longest- living octuplets were hailed as something akin to a miracle. Curiosity quickly turned to criticism when details of her life surfaced: She was divorced and had six other children living in her mother's house, which was in foreclosure. She was living off college loans, her children's dis- ability payments and workers' compensation from on-the-job injuries at a state mental hospital. Scrutiny intensified when it was revealed that all her children were conceived through in-vitro fertilization. The doctor who per- formed the procedures now faces censure from the state medical board. She once claimed she would support her family by returning to school to become a counselor, but those plans wilted. Suleman now says media deals will pay for her children's upbringing, which is estimated by the U.S. government to cost $1.3 million to $2.7 million through age 17 — not including medical costs. A magazine cover story could earn between $50,000 and $75,000 for non-celebrities. Smaller items could give Sule- man between $5,000 and $10,000 a pop, said media con- sultant Richard Laermer.
