Shop Class as Soulcraft, An Inquiry Into the Value of Work by Matthew B. Crawford will give you a fresh look at today's world. If you enjoyed the philosophical approach Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Mechanics by Robert M. Pirsig you will enjoy this book as well. This book is not just for the motorcyclist but should be mandatory for every educator, businessman and parent that is thinking about paying for their kid's education. This book is incredibly insightful in this changing world. It addresses modern technology, labor, outsourcing and a no-kidding, look at the pros and cons of college. Although the title says this is an "inquiry of work," to me it is a book about doing what you love and developing the skills it takes to get to a point where a craftsman masters his or her trade. I enjoyed this book so much that I've bought more than 10 copies to give my friends that are riders and teachers. Under and Alone: The True Story of the Undercover Agent Who Infiltrated America's Most Violent Outlaw Motorcycle Gang by William Queen. This is the true story of Agent Queen (a.k.a. Billy St. John) who infiltrates the outlaw motorcycle club called the Mongols. Queen, a North Carolina native and former Special Forces soldier who joins the ATF opens the door into a deep undercover world of law enforcement. Agent Queen's story takes him from a routine assignment and ends with him becoming a top ranking official in one of America's most feared motorcycle clubs, the Mongols. His story takes you deep inside the outlaw world of what is called the "one percenters" of the motorcycle world. During the span of his investigation, he worked with insurance companies to determine how to identify stolen motorcycles and parts and discovered the money laundering business of drugs and stolen goods. During his investigation, he had to take drugs, witness violent attacks and often had to break the law to protect himself from harms way. This book exposes you to the hardships, emotions, isolation and sense of justice that is faced by an undercover officer. The book also reveals the brotherhood of a motorcycle club and the painful choice of having to arrest and testify against people that Agent Queen befriended throughout the investigation. Convictions included everything from money laundering and drug trafficking to theft and murder. His investigation included more 700 law enforcement agents, multiple law enforcement agencies and secured the convictions of 50 bikers. Fifty-five thousand miles later, Neil covered most of North America, Mexico and Belize and returned to rediscover life. This book shares some insightful tips about riding, highways, towns and history. Since this book, Neil has become a much published author and is now in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
