A Pesticide Collection Day will be held Dec. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cumberland County Agriculture Center, 301 E. Mountain Dr. The event offers free disposal of pesticides for residents of Cumberland and surrounding counties. Cumberland County Cooperative Extension and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Pesticide Disposal Assistance Program are sponsoring the event. Pesticides accepted include banned and out-of-date pesticides. If pesticides have missing or unreadable labels, call Cooperative Extension at 910-321-6862 for instructions. Save any portion of the label for help in identifying the material. Unknown materials cannot be accepted. Pesticides in pressurized gas cylinders or containers greater than 5 gallons in size require special handling. The Solid Waste Management Household Hazardous Waste facility at 923 Wilkes Road, accepts pesticides year-round from Cumberland County residents. Pesticide Collection Day Dec. 16 The Salvation Army is accepting applications for the North Carolina Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) to help qualified families with their heating costs. Citizens may apply from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Salvation Army office at 1047 Southern Ave. The program provides a one-time vendor payment to help eligible households pay their heating bills. Household income must not exceed 130 percent of the poverty level. During December, only households with a person age 60 and older or a disabled individual receiving services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services can apply. These priority applications will be accepted through Dec. 31, or until funds are exhausted. Other households may apply from Jan. 2 through March 31, or until funds are exhausted. The Salvation Army manages the program for the Department of Social Services and all applications must go to the Salvation Army's office at 1047 Southern Ave. For more information, contact the DSS LIEAP message line at 910-677-2821 or the Salvation Army at 910-307-0359. The program, which encourages people of all ages to keep reading during the winter, offers fun and prizes at all eight locations or online. Participants in the age 11 and under category can enter to win a Playaway Launchpad and participants age 12 and up can enter to win a Kindle Fire.
