Ontheair By Carl Steward BayAreaNewsGroup NAPA Two-thirds of the Frys.com Open's certifi- able power trio delivered the goods in Thursday's opening round, a sweet- bounce development for a tournament that unexpect- edly lost Tiger Woods as a major attraction less than a month ago. Without Woods, who had back surgery a week af- ter officially committing to the event in September, the event's star focus shifted quickly to the supergroup of Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Brandt Snedeker, which easily commanded the largest first-day gal- lery on Silverado Resort's North course. McIlroy, the world's No. 1 golfer for 54 straight weeks and much of the past three years until Jordan Spi- eth and Jason Day passed him during the last two months, shot a 4-under par 68 despite several missed birdie opportunities, while Rose, ranked seventh in the world, came in a stroke lower with a 5-under 67. Only Snedeker, a two-time AT&T Pebble Beach Pro- Am titlist and the 2012 Fe- dEx Cup winner, faltered with a 1-over 73. Rose was tied for sixth after the opening round while McIlroy was tied for 11th behind Brendan Steele, a 32-year-old na- tive Californian who shot a 9-under 63 to take the early tournament lead, and Ven- ezuelan Jhonattan Vegas, who was a stroke back af- ter an 8-under 64. Harold Varner III, just the second African American since Woods to earn a PGA Tour card, was alone in third two strokes back after fin- ishing eagle-birdie-birdie for a 7-under 65. To be sure, there is no shortage of compelling story lines after the first round, and with two of the biggest names in golf on the leader board in the PGA Tour's leadoff event for 2015-16, Frys.com offi- cials looking for big crowd numbers in Napa this weekend have to be ec- static. It was a strong debut performance by a pair of players from the United Kingdom that had never played Silverado until a few days ago. McIlroy was long and precise off the tee all day and his approach shots were equally on target, and he might have been even closer to the top of the board if he'd been able to sink a few more putts. "On the greens, I obvi- ously gave myself a lot of chances," McIlroy said. "I converted a few, but I'll need to hole a few more. I feel like this is a golf course that you can give yourself a lot of chances. There are guys that are 6-, 7-, 9-under par That's what you sort of need to do around here. "But if I can keep hitting the ball the way I am and just hole a few more, I will be OK." Desperate for a victory, the Saints (2-4) enjoyed big plays in all phases, a com- mon occurrence when New Orleans hosts night games. Including the playoffs, the Saints have now won 19 of 21 games in the Superdome in prime time. Michael Mauti, who grew up near New Or- leans after his father, Rich, played for the Saints, blocked a punt and recov- ered it for a touchdown, delighting the Superdome crowd with a play reminis- cent of Steve Gleason's fa- mous block against Atlanta in 2006. Mark Ingram ran for two short touchdowns, and New Orleans' defense recovered three fumbles — two inside its own 20. Devonta Freeman rushed for 100 yards, in- cluding a 25-yard TD, for Atlanta (5-1). Matt Ryan passed for 295 yards and two TDs. Freeman also turned a short pass into a 13-yard touchdown, but by then it was too late for the Fal- cons. Freeman's first touch- down cut New Orleans' lead to 24-14 with 13:07 re- maining, putting pressure on the Saints to answer. The Saints responded with the type of will-im- posing drive that was com- monplace during much of the decade since coach Sean Payton and Brees ar- rived in New Orleans, but seldom seen this season. New Orleans drove 80 yards in 11 plays, eating about five minutes off the clock. During the series, Watson tied a career high with his 10th catch of the game. Brees found Bran- don Cooks for 26 yards on one third down. Ingram capped the drive by pow- ering in for his second TD to make it 31-14. That wasn't the only ex- ample of the swagger re- stored to the Saints' of- fense. Late in the third quarter, the Saints capped a 10-play, 63 yard drive by first drawing Atlanta off- side on fourth-and-goal from the four, then kept the offense on the field and converted a 2-yard pass to Watson. The Saints never trailed, racing in front on the open- ing series, an 80-yard drive capped by Ingram's first TD. Mauti made it 14-0 when he smothered Matt Bosh- er's punt attempt, scooped up the ball as he landed and danced into the end zone. Atlanta cut it to 14-7 on Ryan's 7-yard pass to Roddy White, but the Fal- cons, who outgained the Saints 265-174 in the half, squandered a pair of prom- ising drives with fumbles. The Dodgers' fell to 4-1 in elimination playoff games since moving to Los Angeles in 1958. Los Angeles got bounced out of the playoffs for the third straight year on a night when nostalgia ruled Dodger Stadium.
