Murphy stole an uncovered third base and went on to score the tying run, then hit a go-ahead homer off Zack Greinke to lead the Mets over the Dodgers 3-2 Thursday night and into an NL Championship Series matchup with the Chicago Cubs. New York trailed 2-1 in the deci- sive Game 5 of the NL Division Se- ries when, with three infielders on the right side and no one near third, Murphy strolled to second on Lu- cas Duda's fourth-inning walk and sprinted to third. Travis d'Arnaud followed with a sacrifice fly. Murphy homered in the sixth for a 3-2 lead. He went 3 for 3 against Greinke, the Dodgers' No. 2 ace who couldn't stave off elimination for the second straight game. Murphy hit .333 in the series and homered three times off Greinke and Clayton Kershaw. The Mets will host the Chicago Cubs in Game 1 on Saturday night. The two teams have never met in the postseason. Jacob deGrom allowed runners in his first five innings but just two runs — on RBI singles by Justin Turner and Andre Ethier that put the Dodg- ers ahead 2-1 in the first. DeGrom (2- 0), the 2014 NL Rookie of the Year with the long, shaggy hair, struck out seven and walked three to earn his second road win of the series. Gabby Peterson had a nice shot on corner for a goal and Arm- strong had an unassisted hard push from the top of the circle for another goal to get the score to 2-2 at the end of regulation. In 7-vs.-7 overtime, Armstrong, Picha, Danny Zuppan, Ally Zup- pan, Angela Diaz, Brooke Barr and Chelsea Hardwick played with intensity, according to coach Teresa Lamb. River Valley scored two flicks. Corning's Armstrong, Danny Zuppan, Sam Mamula and An- gela Diaz had flicks blocked and Ally Zuppan had a hard score to the corner. Lamb said Hardwick did a great job blocking the goalie and Maggie Miron stayed focused and helped with the double teams. "We worked well as a team and Corning plays with great sports- manship and Cardinal pride," Lamb said. Armstrong, Diaz, Peterson, Hardwick and both Zuppans worked well with the passes, Lamb said. Brandt swam a personal-best time of 1 minute, 04.70 seconds, crushing the old mark of 1:05.82. In addition to setting the new record she beat Amy Harter of Chico by .20 seconds to win the race. Brandt now holds seven of the eight possible records at Red Bluff High School. Many Spartans enjoyed suc- cess against Chico during what was the last home meet of the season. Mitchell Sauve and Nathan Fregoso were double winners. Sauve, a senior swimming at his final meet in the Red Bluff pool, won the 200-yard individ- ual medley and the 100 freestyle with a season best time of 56.42. Fregoso won the 200 free and the 100 backstroke. Noah Caylor captured the gold in the 100 butterfly and Ja- cob Patterson was second in the 100 breaststroke. For the girls team, Ellie Fletcher won the 100 free and was fourth in the 200 IM. Jordan Munoz swam a personal best of 1:20.99 in the 100 breaststroke and finished in third place. The Spartans are gearing up for league championships, which are Thursday at Enter- prise High School. Mercy takes second COTTONWOOD West Valley hosted Mercy, Redding Chris- tian, Central Valley and Amer- ican Christian Wednesday for a swim meet. The Warriors boys' and girls' teams each ended up third and the total points put the Warriors second overall. Male top performers were Marcus Kuchle, who was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.13) and third in the 50 freestyle. Holiday Rider was first in the 500 freestyle (6:02.00). Female top performers were Mikaela Weber, who was second in the 50 freestyle. Minji Park was third in the 50 freestyle. Katelyn Tobin was second in the 100 backstroke. Weber, Park, To- bin and Emilia Gray were first in the 200 freestyle relay, and the team of Weber, Park, Gray and Jisu Choi were fourth in the 200 medley relay.
