OCTOBER 14-20, 2015 UCW 15 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM The Mammography Quality Standards Act was enacted by Congress to regulate the quality of care in mammography and requires mammography facilities to meet uniform standards of quality. These standards include strict guidelines on training for mammographers. Fayetteville Technical Community College offers the Mammography Certificate Program for radiographers to meet these guidelines. Prospective students must be American Registry of Radiologic Technologists registered radiographers in good standing. Graduates will receive a certificate in mammography, meet MQSA initial training requirements for mammography, and will be eligible to apply to take the ARRT post primary certification examination in Mammography. The mammography program is designed to be one semester in length but can be divided into two semesters based on the individual student's needs. The didactic portion of the program is offered completely online and the clinical component meets face-to-face for 15 hours per week. Many radiographers have the desire to specialize in mammography but are unable to attend school full time because of work schedules. Offering a portion of the program online and having the option to divide the courses into two semesters allow access for working radiographers who would have scheduling conflicts in the traditional setting. There are two options for the clinical education courses: traditional and non-traditional. For the traditional option, the clinical education site is set up by the college. Sites are available in Fayetteville, Fort Bragg, Pinehurst, Rocky Mount, Lumberton, Elizabethtown and Wilmington. Clinical education sites are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. For the non-traditional option, the student secures the clinical education site. The non-traditional option allows radiographers to complete their clinical requirements at a location in another area of North Carolina or in another state. The mammography program currently consists of five courses that total 16 credit hours. The courses are MAM 101 Mammographic Procedures and Image Analysis, MAM 102 Mammographic Instrumentation and Quality Assurance, MAM 103 Digital Mammography, MAM 105 Mammography Clinical Education, and MAM 109 Mammography Capstone. Course work includes clinical rotations to mammography facilities, breast anatomy/physiology, patient preparation/education, mammographic procedures, interventional procedures, image analysis, mammographic instrumentation, physics, quality control and quality assurance. In Fall 2016, MAM 104 Breast Tomosynthesis will be added to the curriculum. Current mammographers may take a portion of the program for continuing education or modality-specific training. MAM 103 Digital Mammography is available separately to current mammographers needing to meet MQSA training requirements for new modalities. MAM 104 Breast Tomosynthesis will be available in Fall 2016 for current mammographers needing to meet MQSA training requirements for this new modality. MAM 109 Mammography Capstone is available separately as a registry review course for radiographers preparing for the ARRT post-primary certification in mammography. Applications are accepted for both fall and spring semesters starting on June 1. There are currently openings available for the spring 2016 semester.
