The Fayet tev ille Sy mphony
Orchest ra gears up to present t he
f irst performance of it s 2015-2016
season, one of t he best seasons to
date.
" We have a really nice variet y
t his season," Christ ine Kast ner,
t he president and CEO of t he
Fayet tev ille Sy mphony Orchest ra,
said. "There is a healt hy mix of
t radit ional and contemporar y in
bot h formal and casual set t ings."
This f irst concer t of t he season
was "Beet hoven and Blue Jeans."
" We did it for t he f irst t ime
last year. The musicians and t he
conductor all wear jeans rat her
t han t u xedos. We just wanted to
show t hat it doesn't mat ter how you
dress to come and enjoy t he music.
It is about hav ing t he experience of
live music, not about what you're
wearing ," Kast ner explains. The
concer t was on Oct . 7. The casual
set t ing was a perfec t way to
int roduce t he less experienced to
t he wonder of classical music.
This t heme of accessibilit y applies to t he ent ire season.
" We have made t hat idea a focus for our market ing t his year. The
t agline for t his season is 'The live experience…a shared advent ure.' This
is a quote f rom t he rock st ar Johnny Green Woo f rom Radiohead. He had
never been a classical music fan. His interest in classical music st ar ted
when he experienced it live. There is not hing like experiencing t he
orchest ra st ar t ing to play in a quiet music hall. It 's incredible compared
to a CD or an iPod," Kast ner said. "To experience it live is a tot ally
dif ferent experience."
Anot her excit ing addit ion to t he season is t he "Holiday Pops" concer t
on Dec. 12. Full of bot h classic and familiar Christ mas music, t his
family-f riendly show w ill have a sing-along por t ion and an amazing
g uest performer.
"Kait ly n Lusk w ill perform w it h us. Lusk is a milit ar y w ife and is also
an internat ionally k now n vocalist . She performs t he 'Lord of t he R ings
Sy mphony ' all over t he world…so t here is a draw for t he milit ar y, coming
to see one of t heir ow n perform and it w ill be a lot of f un. It w ill also be
f un for her. She approached us because she wanted an oppor t unit y to
sing in Fayet tev ille. This is her home now," Kast ner says.
In addit ion to prov iding high-qualit y music to t he communit y, t he
Fayet tev ille Sy mphony Orchest ra has a st rong focus on educat ion. One of
t he many ways t he organizat ion educates t he public is t hrough it s yout h
orchest ra, which in just t wo years has been ver y successf ul. The yout h
orchest ra w ill have t wo concer t s and w ill play alongside t he Fayet tev ille
Sy mphony Orchest ra in t he "Light s, Camera, Sy mphony!" performance.
" We would like it to grow a lit t le more. We would like 50 or 60 k ids
so it is more like a st andard Sy mphony, but for our second year, it is far
beyond what I dared to even hope for. It shows t hat t here really was a
need for t his in t he communit y. We have some st udent s who come f rom
Raeford to par t icipate. We are meet ing a need. Some of t he surrounding
communit ies just don't have as much to of fer in t he ar t s as Cumberland
Count y," Kast ner said.
