Thursday, March 15, 2012 – Daily News 5A Free massages offered for veterans Offering free massages to U.S. veterans as part of a national program, giv- ing comes naturally to new business owner mas- sage and spa therapist Christine Mata of Gerber. Growing up and rais- ing a family in Tehama County, she knows what it is like to live on a "coun- try budget," but that does- n't stop her from being involved with different things, she said. Her first taste of giving back was in 4-H and FFA community services. Then, she helped in quilt- ing guilds community ser- vice. "I was the unofficial ironing lady, since I was the youngster of the group," Mata said. "One year, we made over 400 quilts and I can proudly say I ironed every one." Giving doesn't have to be on a grand scale and a giver doesn't have to be someone famous, she said. "There is always some- one worse off than you," she said. After some health issues and a career change, Mata took a year to go to school for mas- sage therapy. She then opened her own massage and spa therapy business reach of Tehama County and The Tehama Museum Jubilee. Mata hosted a free chair massage at St. Elizabeth Community Hospital's Health Spree. Her newest venture is through the nationwide program, "Hands for Heroes." The program's goal is to give out one million massages to veterans across the U.S. Mata has volunteered to give three to four mas- sages a month to local veterans. She wants to put sign- up sheets at the local vet- erans assistance offices and in the Corning Cham- ber of Commerce office, she said. This time, she's giving away massages. "I have always been a caregiver, from raising kids to working with In- Home Support Services," Mata said. "This just felt like a natural thing to do."
