Bonnie Baxter who teaches Plant Science at the high school had a dream of developing an orchard project in order to give her students an opportunity to learn orchard management skills. She wanted them to learn not only how to plant the new trees but also spacing needs, spray- ing protocols, and water needs as well as pruning and harvesting practices. In the Spring of 2011, the Red Bluff Garden Club stepped into the picture by Courtesy photo Teacher Bonnie Baxter, left, and Orchard Specialist Richard Buchner, right, work with students from Los Molinos High School to celebrate Arbor Day. offering trees to LMHS to be planted during Arbor Week. In that year, the Garden Club donated six fruit trees to the High School as part of its com- munity outreach program. In the Fall of 2011, five pomegranate trees were added and on March 7 of this year, three peach trees and an Asian pear were added to the "orchard". Three citrus trees will also be planted later this year- as soon as the threat of frost has passed. Enter Rick Buchner from the Extension Ser- vice. Rick's forte is orchard management and what an asset he is to the community and to LMHS. He came with pruning shears in hand, gave important instruc- tion and did some "deep" pruning to both the new and the established orchard. The students and the Garden Club members were very much impressed. We all added our "OOOOOHS" and "AAAAHS" as we watched half a tree bite the dust. Kudos to Bonnie Bax- ter for the vision, the Plant Science Class for the physical labor, Rick Buchner for the expertise, and the RB Garden Club for their financial gen- erosity, all of which served to bring together another great Arbor Day event. Red Bluff Garden Club is affiliated with Cascade District Garden Clubs; California Garden Clubs, Inc., Pacific Region Garden Clubs and National Garden Clubs Inc.
