NEWS OF THE WEIRD by CHUCK SHEPPARD Newspapers in Sweden reported in January that two of the country's most heinous murderers apparently fell in love with each other behind the locked doors of their psychiatric institution and, following a 26- day Internet-chat "courtship," have decided to marry. Mr. Isakin Jonsson ("the Skara Cannibal") was convicted of killing, decapitating and eating his girlfriend, and Michelle Gustafsson ("the Vampire Woman") was convicted of killing a father of four and drinking his blood. Said the love-struck Jonsson (certainly truthfully), to the newspaper Expressen, "I have never met anyone like (Michelle)." The WEEKLY HOROSCOPES BY HOLIDAY For the Week of March 11, 2012 ARIES (March 21-April 19) There will be key moments during the week, in which all eyes are on you. Hopefully, you'll like the way it feels to be the most important person in the room in those moments. The rest of the time, you'll en- joy giving your attention and support to others. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You have friends and family who miss you dearly, and this is the perfect week to catch up with them. Sometimes you're afraid to call because you think the conversation will take too long. But this week's social discourse promises to be quite manage- able and pleasant. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) Keep your goals challenging, but not so challenging that you are daunted by the very idea of them. Scale it down to what you can realistically accomplish, and then nudge it up ever so slightly. Aim for consistency; a plan that builds slow-but-sure momentum will be best. Chuck Sheppard pair will almost certainly remain locked up forever, but Gustafsson, on the Internet, wrote that she hopes they will be released, to live together and "have dogs and pursue our hobbies, piercing and tattoos." [The Local (Stockholm), 1-30-2012] Compelling Explanations In December, music teacher Kevin Gausepohl, 37, was charged in Tacoma, Wash., Municipal Court with communicating with a minor for immoral purposes, allegedly convincing a 17-year-old female student that she could sing better if she tried it naked. Gausepohl later told an investigator of his excitement about experimenting at the "human participant level" to determine how sexual arousal affects vocal range. The girl complied with "some of" Gausepohl's requests, but finally balked and turned him in. [The News Tribune (Tacoma), 12-29-2011] Thinking Outside the Box: (1) Rock Dagenais, 26, pleaded guilty recently to weapons charges after creating a siege by bringing a knife, a sawed-off rifle and 100 rounds of ammunition to a Quebec elementary school. He eventually surrendered peacefully and said he was only trying to send the kids a message not to disrespect each other by bullying. (2) Daniel Whitaker has been hospitalized in Indianapolis ever since, in November, he drove up the steps of the Indiana War Memorial with a gun, gasoline and an American flag, and set the steps on fire. In an interview in December, he told WRTV that he was only trying to get everyone's attention so they would think of Jesus Christ and "love each other." [Ottawa Citizen, 9-26-2011] [WRTV (Indianapolis), 12-19-2011] COPYRIGHT 2011 CHUCK SHEPHERD WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM CANCER (June 22-July 22) More than any other factor, attitude will determine your suc- cess or failure. Take the time to get into a good mood. Before, you may have considered these kinds of efforts superfl uous, but now you will know their critical impact. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) As the sign of enter- tainment, you are typically highly attuned to the signals your audience gives you, especially when that audience is just one person. You'll know when to change the subject or end a conversation. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Grab a pen and use it often this week. You'll be mentally sharp and cosmically aligned with the intellect of great thinkers. Your free associations and doodles could produce magical results. Note that the mechanics of writing, as opposed to keyboarding, will work in your favor. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) You'll alternate between having it all together and moments when you feel like you're spinning out of con- trol. Your process is normal. There actually is a direction, and you'll see it once you calm down and get a better perspective. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) You are so clever and mischievous this week that it would be a shame to waste any energy scheming for others. Use your wit to trick yourself instead! Trick yourself into getting started on a big project and thinking of it as fun instead of work. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You won't move forward until you start giving yourself credit for what you've already accomplished. Think only of what you've done, not of what you still have to do, wish you would have done, or will do tomorrow. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) If your in- sides are not matching up with your outsides, you're like most people. Hiding your feelings and screening your thoughts are skills that help you survive and thrive in the human fam- ily, not bad habits to be ashamed of. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Seek the company of healthy, smart, interesting people. Try to get to know people you fi nd attractive. It won't always work out, but it only has to work out once to make a huge difference in your life. One relationship will help you do something remarkable, like change your relationship with food or fi nd your passion. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) People around you will be mighty distracted this week, so you'll have to use special tactics to get through. For instance, ask for the attention you need. And speak the name of your beloved to focus this person on what you're saying and what you want. Womack Army Medical Center ADVICE GODDESS Lard of the Dance When I got married, I was a slim 6'2", but I've gained a lot of weight. My wife gained about 20 pounds but recently lost that and more. I've been as high as 265, but I'm now at 238 and losing about a pound a week, which isn't fast enough for my wife. When I contemplate going on a stricter diet, what comes to mind is feeling angry, tired and hungry at my high-stress job. My wife said that I obviously love food more than her, and that if I won't lose weight for her, maybe I'll do it for our boys. She considers me self-centered and narcissistic because I'm not losing enough weight, and I consider her self-centered and narcissistic for framing every argument in terms of what she wants and isn't getting. What do you think? Does being overweight mean you don't love your signifi cant other? — Fatso By Holiday Mathis Chances are, the problem isn't that your diet isn't strict enough — as in, you should be sniffi ng celery sticks instead of eating them — but that you've been following the obesity-causing dietary "science" promoted by the government and much of the medical establishment. The "weight loss" diet they advise -— high- carb, low-fat — is actually a weight- gain diet. Also, as Dr. Amy Alkon Mary Dan Eades, co-author of The Protein Power Lifeplan, writes, "Study after study has shown the low fat diet to be a failure in treating obesity, in solving diabetes, in reducing blood pressure or in decreasing heart disease risk." Investigative science journalist Gary SswFs Thqh Hhpu &u h h 8uvyqivu@qphv HvqvsrTrvpr 8hTrhThsr XrDshhq8uvyqr QrthTyqvrQth 7rhsrrqvtDshv Ivv8hr IrQhrTQth 7hi7hvp USD86S@ 8rSryhv WhppvrCrhyuphr8rr 9hq CTurh8vt7hiDs Ghihq9ryvrU Hur7hiVv IrhhyDrvr8hrVv TpvhyXx 7rhCrhyu6hrr 8hrHhhtr 8rrvt PurTrvpr ( ( & &"#(( ( & % (' 8yvvphyyrhpr6yy 6rvph@rh Arvshvyrhrphyy Taubes spent more than a decade digging through the body of research on diet. As he writes in Why We Get Fat, the evidence shows that it is carbohydrates — from sugar, fl our, easily digested starchy vegetables like potatoes and juice and beer — that cause the insulin secretion that puts on fat. Unfortunately, it seems your love handles have become resentment handles. Some of the ill will between you may melt away as you lose the gut that Ding Dongs and Mountain Dew built, but it points to a bad pattern. You don't win marital arguments by clinging to how right you are and how wrong your spouse is; you win by working together to make things as right as you can for both of you ("us fi rst" instead of "me fi rst"). Some problems aren't solvable, but you'll be more able to shrug off an impasse if you're consistently putting yourselves in each other's place. That's the spirit that keeps you from striking out in revenge — for example, by insisting you're on the Zone diet (but not mentioning that it's the zone from the outermost wall of Dunkin' Donuts to the outermost wall of Cinnabon).
