NEWSPAPERS IN EDUCATION CLASS WINS CONTEST Assemblyman James Gallagher (R-Yuba City), Senator Jim Nielsen (R- Gerber) and Congressman Doug LaMalfa (R-Biggs) will host a forum Tuesday for members of the public to hear from experts about the future of water and its effects on North State res- idents. "The California Wa- ter Commission is making decisions that are affect- ing how we live farm and raise our cattle," Nielsen said. "Water is essential to our everyday lives. It is vi- tal that we show our sup- port of the construction of Sites Reservoir as promised in Proposition 1." "Sites Reservoir is well positioned to be competi- tive for Prop. 1 water bond funding because of the many benefits this project can provide to California's water system," Gallagher said. "The purpose of this forum is to educate the pub- lic on steps they can take to help advocate for water storage projects our state desperately needs." "California's voters have spoken strongly in favor of new water storage fa- cilities, and Sites Reser- voir is by far the most com- petitive proposal," LaMalfa said. "However, coordinat- ing local support with legis- lative efforts is key to ensur- ing that the California Wa- ter Commission recognizes the viability and benefits of the project." The forum is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday at Man- zanita Place, 1705 Manza- nita Ave. in Chico. In November 2014, Cal- ifornia voters approved Proposition 1, the Water Quality, Supply, and In- frastructure Improvement Act of 2014, affirming the need for a safe and reliable supply of water to support the state's economy, envi- ronment, and quality of life. The bond includes $2.7 billion for public benefits of water storage projects that improve the operation of the state water system, are cost effective, and pro- vide measurable benefits to the Delta ecosystem or its tributaries. Sites Reservoir is shovel ready to store up to 1.8 mil- lion acre feet of water.
