SEPTEMBER 9-15, 2015 UCW 9 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM In this year alone, an estimated 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the United States. Add to that number another 60,290 non-invasive cases, and you will understand that the fight against breast cancer is sill very much alive in the United States. Here, where medical care is readily available, 1 in 8 women, or about 12 percent of our female population, will develop breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. Look around your workplace, your neighborhood or your church, the likelihood that someone you know personally is dealing with breast cancer is very real. It is a fight that takes its toll on a woman's health both physical and mental. For those going through it, the support of loved ones and friends has a tremendous impact. To show solidarity and support for those who are fighting breast cancer, Fayetteville's Women's View is hosting Bras for the Cause to raise funds to benefit the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation and their work in supporting women who are in the fight. In an effort to promote breast cancer awareness "Artful Bras" are submitted fully decorated as original works of art. Each Bra is unique, entertaining, humorous and beautiful. Artful Bras will be created to memorialize one who has been lost to breast cancer, in honor of a breast cancer survivor or as a message of strength and hope to those brave women who battle this horrible disease. All bras will be on display at Gallery 208, located at 208 Rowan Street, Fayetteville NC, at WomensViewNC.com and on our Women's View FaceBook Page. On Tuesday, Oct. 6, Women's View will host a gallery opening at Gallery 208. The opening is the first chance the community will have to take a look at the "Artful Bras," and get the chance to vote for three top winners. Prizes will got to the bras with the most votes in the following categories: Show me the Ta-Tas, People's Choice and Gallery Favorite. Each vote is $5, so bring some cash and come out to the opening where there is always fun, food and great people. Of course, we cannot make this event a success without you and your submissions of "Artful Bra." To participate in the event, each participant is asked to submit a size 36C underwire bra, covered entirely (excluding straps), with anything and everything from fabric, feathers, fringe and paint! All Bra submissions must be named, fully decorated and hung on a padded hanger. If you have a story or dedication to someone special you would like included with your bra please provide that information printed on a separate card and attached to the hanger when you submit your Bra. Decorated bra submissions need to be turned in at the Up & Coming Office/Gallery 208 located at 208 Rowan Street starting Monday Sept. 28 through Friday Oct. 3rd. After the final submissions, bras will then be prepared for display and the Exhibit & Auction on Tuesday October 6, 2015. If you have your own business or your workplace allows it, your bras can be displayed there for early voting opportunities! All money donated for a vote and bra registration fees should be turned in together by Friday October 3, 2015. Bras will be displayed in the 208 Gallery located at 208 Rowan Street, for goting starting on Tuesday October 6 until Friday Oct. 30 at noon. Voters will be asked to donate $5 per vote. No limit to the number of votes per person. $5 Votes cannot be placed on-line, $5 voting can only be done with original designers or in-person at Gallery 208. Once the voting is underway, all bras involved in the event will go up for auction. You can bid at Gallery 208 or on the Women's View FaceBook page in a special album marked for this event!
