Ontheair By Tom Withers TheAssociatedPress CLEVELAND There was no need for a heartfelt letter this summer. LeB- ron James isn't going any- where. This decision was easy. Just shy of the one-year anniversary of his cele- brated homecoming, James agreed to terms on a two- year, $47 million contract, two people familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press on Thurs- day. The deal includes a $24 million player option for 2016-17, said the people who spoke on condition of anonymity because James has not yet signed the con- tract. That will be done soon enough as the four-time MVP has a busy schedule over the next few weeks to promote a new comedy film in which he portrays himself. James is hosting a VIP screening for family and friends in Akron on Fri- day, where he'll walk the red carpet with the other stars of "Trainwreck," an R-rated movie he filmed last summer shortly after announcing he was return- ing to the Cavs. Unlike last July 11, when his essay in Sports Illustrated touched Cleve- land fans and changed the NBA's landscape, James wasn't the star attraction during this summer's free agency period. DeAndre Jordan and others took care of all the drama as James went on vacation in the Bahamas with close friends Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul and Car- melo Anthony. James ended any sus- pense or speculation about his future with Cleveland by saying several times during the past season that he intends to end his career with the Cavs. This is the first time since 2006 that James will re-sign with a team. On two previous occasions as a free agent he left for an- other team, signing with Miami in 2010 and Cleve- land in 2014. NBA FREE AGENCY James, Cavs agree to 2-year deal By Jerome Pugmire The Associated Press LE HAVRE, FRANCE The yellow jersey seems to be an unlucky charm at this Tour de France. German rider Tony Martin started Thursday's sixth stage in the lead and ended it in the hospital af- ter breaking his collarbone in a crash that he caused near the finish line. He became the second race leader to pull out of the race, after Swiss rider Fa- bian Cancellara fractured two vertebrae in his lower back on Monday. "The collarbone is in lots of pieces, so it was a major impact," Martin's Etixx Quick-Step team doctor Helge Riepenhof said. "One of the pieces came through the skin, which means it's an open fracture." The crash also dragged down defending cham- pion Vincenzo Nibali and fellow Tour contender Nairo Quintana, but they escaped with cuts and bruises. Czech rider Zdenek Stybar rode away amid the chaos to clinch his first Tour stage win. While neither Martin nor Cancellara was a con- tender for the overall vic- tory, the injuries they sus- tained highlight how tough this Tour has been already — and the battered riders haven't even reached the mountains yet. There was intense heat on day 1, ferocious side winds on day 2, a huge crash on stage 3, scary cobblestone sections on stage 4, and lashing rain on stage 5. And on the sixth day, an- other crash. "This has been like a movie, an emotional roller coaster at this Tour," Mar- tin said. With Martin out, 2013 Tour champion Chris Froome moves into the overall lead. The Briton may elect not to wear the yellow jersey on Friday — a sign of respect toward Martin under cycling's eti- quette guidelines. TOUR DE FRANCE Martin pulls out with injury He's 2nd leader to withdraw from race during hectic week 4.99 ERA. "It happened last year. It happened the year before, where I'm a lit- tle on to off. "It's not mechanical or physical; it's just location. Early on in the year those pitches were getting swung at and hit into the ground. And now they are getting taken for balls. I have to fight back into the count. That kind of frustrates me. It's a battle." Chavez, who wonders if perhaps he's gotten too predictable, said he needs to hit a "mental refresh button." Fortunately for him, the All-Star break be- gins after Sunday's game in Cleveland, and he's go- ing to have seven to 10 days between starts to find that button, wherever it is. If he finds it, maybe he could lead some of his teammates to it, because there are more than a few players in need of similar refreshment. There's Jesse Hahn, who was supposed to start Sat- urday in Cleveland. Instead he flew back to the Bay Area on Thursday to get an MRI. His ailing right el- bow isn't improving at all quickly, and the medical team wants to take a pre- cautionary look to make sure nothing is wrong. There's Marcus Semien, who made his majors-high 28th error Thursday. The A's were already down 4-2 in the eighth when Semien threw wildly past first base, allowing two runs to score. There's Scott Kazmir, who came out of Wednes- day's start with left triceps tightness. He threw before the game, playing catch in the outfield. A's FROM PAGE 1 Green's girlfriend, best friend and agent. It was the latest surreal scene to play out for Green, who has become a basket- ball celebrity in the Bay Area and beyond. "I never imagined walk- ing through the airport being a struggle. Or ev- erywhere you go just be- ing a complete struggle. I never imagined that for myself. In my wildest dreams, I couldn't imag- ine that," Green said. "The respect that you get from everyone after winning a championship, it's been incredible." Green was a restricted free agent, meaning the Warriors could have matched any offer he re- ceived. But Golden State al- ways expected to pay what- ever salary he commanded, even if that meant dipping into the league's luxury tax — which it will almost surely do now. The Warriors drafted Green 35th overall in 2012 after passing on the for- mer Michigan State stand- out with their first two se- lections. He took over as the starting power for- ward this season after Da- vid Lee injured his left hamstring in the final pre- season game. The 25-year-old Green averaged 11.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists and finished runner-up for NBA Defensive Player of the Year. In the playoffs, he aver- aged 13.7 points, 10.1 re- bounds and 5.2 assists, including a triple-double in the Game 6 clincher at Cleveland in the NBA Fi- nals. Green FROM PAGE 1 Williams said. "She actu- ally beat me before. She made me improve, so she has me on my toes. It's not going to be an easy match, so I'll be fighting a lot." Williams is unbeaten in majors since winning last year's U.S. Open and this year's Australian and French Opens. A win here would match the "Ser- ena Slam" she achieved in 2002-03. Williams would then need to win the U.S. Open to complete a true Grand Slam, a sweep of all four majors in the same year, something which hasn't been accomplished since Steffi Graf did it in 1988. Williams is also one win away from a 21st Grand Slam title, one short of the Open era record held by Graf. Williams extended her career record against Sharapova to 18-2. Sharapova beat Williams in the 2004 Wimbledon fi- nal for her first Grand Slam title, but the rivalry has been one-sided for more than a decade. "I always expect her to play the best tennis against myself and a few other elite players," Sharapova said. "She does always come up with great tennis. You have to be able not to just pro- duce your best tennis, but more. Obviously it hasn't happened for me."
