ALASTAIRGRANT—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS Top-ranked Serena Williams will face 21-year-old Garbine Muguruza in the Wimbledon final a er Williams topped Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-4on Thursday. ByStephenWilson TheAssociatedPress LONDON SerenaWilliamsisjustone win away from another Grand Slam milestone. The top-ranked Williams main- tained her 11-year dominance over Maria Sharapova, beating the Rus- sian 6-2, 6-4 on Thursday to reach her eighth Wimbledon champion- ship match and 25th career Grand Slam final. In beating Sharapova for the 17th straight time, Williams won her 27th consecutive Grand Slam match and will now be playing for a fourth straight major title — a "Serena Slam" — and the third leg of a calen- dar-year Grand Slam. "At least I made it to a final of four," Williams said. "That's pretty good. That's pretty good." Williams served 13 aces, including three in the final game, had 29 win- ners and never faced a break point in overpowering the fourth-seeded Sharapova, who hit six double-faults and couldn't find a way to cope with her rival's relentless pace. "When she stepped up her game, I was able to step up mine as well," Williams said. It will be Williams' first appear- ance in the Wimbledon final since 2012, when she won her fifth title at the All England Club. "I think it definitely gets better," she said. "It's been a long time since I've been in the final here. I just feel really good just to be in another fi- nal, so it's really cool." Williams' opponent will be 21-year-old Garbine Muguruza, who beat Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the first semifinal. She's the first Spanish woman to advance to the Wimbledon final since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in 1996. Williams has won two out her three matches against Muguruza, but the Spaniard beat her 6-2, 6-2 in the second round of the French Open last year. That was Williams' most lopsided loss in a Grand Slam. "It's great for her. It's great for me," WIMBLEDON Williamswinstoreachfinal Top-rankedAmerican beats Sharapova, for 17th straight time, in semis By Antonio Gonzalez The Associated Press OAKLAND Draymond Green has overcome the odds his entire life, going from a chubby kid from a small Michigan town to Big Ten Player of the Year to NBA cham- pion. The versatile forward has done it all while living by the mantra his mother, Mary Babers-Green, instilled in him at an early age: "Men that don't work don't eat." Green has put in the work — and now he can eat as well as he wants. A week after reaching a ver- bal agreement, Green signed his $82 million, five-year contract with the Golden State Warriors on Thursday to remain with the reigning champions. Green thanked his family, friends and the franchise at a news conference on the team's practice court, which was lined with about 150 young campers and front-office employees. THESCORE By John Hickey Bay Area News Group NEW YORK Oakland A's starter Jesse Chavez has been through midseason struggles before, but this one, punctuated by Thursday' 6-2 loss to the New York Yankees, might be the worst yet. Maybe that is because this skid, a 1-3 record in his last four starts with a 6.55 ERA, is happening in the now. Maybe it's because many of his teammates are with him, 10 games under .500 and stuck in the American League West cellar 88 games into the season. "This is that stretch where it is for me, personally, it happens ev- ery year," Chavez said. He had a four-game stretch in 2014 starting June 27 where he allowed 12 runs in four starts for a 2-2 record and BASEBALL Struggling A's, Chavez fall to host Yankees The yellow jersey seems to be an unlucky charm at this Tour de France.
