2A Daily News – Tuesday, January 24, 2012 Community people&events Thursday programs Special to the DN The Sacramento River Discovery Center's Thursday Evening Program series featured Doug Compton from the Tehama County Department of Agriculture. Compton provided information about the services of his department and the work they do to protect agri- cultural products and food supply. He shared some interesting facts including the percentage of the nation's bee population that will be coming to Califor- nia in the next month or so to help with the pollination of the almond crop. There will be a fair percentage of that supply right here in Tehama County. The variety of tasks performed by the Department of Agriculture was a surprise to some attendees. They check store scanners, the scales at stores, certify organ- ic agricultural products, certify shipments of agricultur- al products both coming and leaving the county to list just a few. "Good plant- or invasive plant"? Compton provided a number of brochures and books that provide listings of plants to avoid because they can become invasive, but more importantly plants that will have a positive impact on the environment and provide beauty on your property. All of the literature is available at the Ag Department located at 1760 Walnut St. If you don't know if a plant or "bug" is good, you can bring it in a sealed container and they will help you identify it. They can help with suggested ways "removing it." The Feb. 16 Thursday evening program to be held at the Farm Bureau building at 275 Sale Lane will feature information about plants and creatures that can hurt water supply and waterways. The meetings start at 7 p.m., and refreshments are available during the ques- tion and answer period. The Sacramento River Discovery Center is located at 1000 Sale Lane within the Mendocino National For- est's Red Bluff Recreation Area. The SRDC is a non- profit 501c3 providing environmental education to peo- ple of all ages with the mission to create stewards of this portion of the Sacramento River Watershed.
