Marlon Byrd hit a bases- loaded single off Lincecum and a tiebreaking solo homer in the eighth inning Thursday night, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-3 victory over San Francisco. The Reds have won 12 of their last 15 regular-season games against the Giants at Great American Ball Park. The Giants will remember this one for their wasted scoring chances against Johnny Cueto and their own slip- ping starter. "You get your chances against a guy like that, you've got to take full advantage of it," manager Bruce Bochy said. "I don't think we did there." The best they could do was deny Cueto the win. Byrd's two-run single off Lincecum put Cueto in posi- tion for the victory. He turned a 3-2 lead over to the NL's worst bullpen in the eighth, and it got away. Despite all that, Cleveland is right where it expected to be after James decided to come home from Miami and return to his first team. The Cavaliers didn't expect to get there like this, though — with Kevin Love suffering a season-ending shoul- der injury in the opening round and Irving trying to gut through problems with both legs. NFL Com- missioner Roger Goodell said Thursday night he will person- ally hear the suspension appeal of Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady, who challenged the league's pun- ishment for his role in using de- flated footballs during the AFC championship game. The NFL Players Association filed the expected appeal about an hour before a 5 p.m. deadline on Thursday, asking for a neu- tral arbitrator to hear the case. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello con- firmed about six hours later that the commissioner had rejected the request. "Commissioner Goodell will hear the appeal of Tom Brady's suspension in accordance with the process agreed upon with the NFL Players Association in the 2011 collective bargaining agree- ment," he said. Goodell's decision was first re- ported by Bleacher Report. By Teresa M. Walker The Associated Press The Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks have regained con- trol of their respective series, do- ing their best to restore order in the NBA playoffs. Though things can turn quickly in these series, and the league could easily fall right back into postseason chaos. That's exactly what the upset-minded Wizards and Grizzlies have in mind. Monday morning when the week started, the Hawks and Warriors both were down 2-1 in their series. Now a combined four wins and five days later, they head into road contests Friday night just one win away from the con- ference finals. The Warriors are looking to close out a second playoff series in the same postseason for the first time since winning the 1975 NBA title, and their confidence is high coming off a pair of impressive routs of the Memphis Grizzlies. Golden State coach Steve Kerr just wants his Warriors to finish off the Grizzlies — now. "You go get it done," Kerr said. "It's going to be tough on the road against an excellent team.
