Improvements included a distinctive water wall separating the locker room from the training area and big-screen TVs. Roughly 15 to 20 new padded lockers were to be set aside for Buckeyes currently playing professional football who might want to train at the facility in the off season. (I guess it paid off.) • Included in other athletic upgrades was $16 million for the golf course practice facility. There are heated tees, unobstructed pitching and putting of up to 45 yards, several new greens, and a hydraulic green which can be contoured many different ways. • Athletic Director Gene Smith can earn up to $1,500,000. Safelite Auto Glass is now the proud sponsor of our goalposts. Football recruiting costs at the Enterprise have been reported at $564,152 for 2013 (middle of the Big Ten). • The Enterprise hired the head of investments from the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System to manage its $3.4 billion in investments. He will be paid $575,000 with the opportunity for bonuses. His predecessor made $627,300. • Sullivant Hall recently reopened after a two-year, $33 million renovation. It is part of an envisioned arts area centered around Mr. and Mrs. Wexner's art facility. A renovation plan was announced for the East side of High Street including, once again, connecting 14th Avenue through to High Street. A Collection Report about Our Little Land Grant College he OSU Marching Band (OSUMB) organization members decided to honor and appropriately recognize and express their appreciation for John C. Gray '60 and all that he has done for the OSUMB by naming "The Ramp" after him. It is an incredible honor because The Ramp is meaningful to any band member, especially one who has been the head drummer. One could argue that John has supported OSUMB with the same level of passion and dedication since the first day he tried out for the band. Getting into the band as a freshman drummer was extraordinary and not easily accomplished because open drum slots were rare in those days. A freshman drummer had to be exceptional to make it. Subsequently, during John's four years in the band he became the head drummer, which meant that he led the band into the stadium and set the pace for marching down the field. That infamous OSUMB entrance has always been known as, The Ramp. John led the way. John has never missed marching in the alumni band at the band reunion game each year, continuing to do The Ramp as the head drummer. John has been very generous with his time and gifts in support of OSUMB. He regularly opens his home in Oakwood, Ohio, for band functions and charitable fundraising. In addition, key elements of the Steinbrenner Band Center exist only because of John's giving. The marching band is about to launch a fundraising campaign and John and his wife, MJ, are serving as the chairmen. Band insiders are well aware of the gray baton used by all drum majors throughout the U.S. John conceived the gray baton and he established a subsidiary company that makes gray batons for drum majors. These unique batons are coveted because they are custom-made (length, weight and balance). John donates a gray baton to each new OSUMB drum major. This is the single-most significant and meaningful recognition that has ever been bestowed on any former band member or anyone ever associated with OSUMB. For a former band member, especially a former head drummer, nothing can surpass having the iconic and sacred Ramp named in one's honor. It is an exceptional and singular honor that must have touched John very deeply and profoundly. Moreover, John is the one person for whom this naming honor makes the most sense. To say the least, it is very well deserved! Contributed by Bill Spain '61. T John C. Gray '60 Honored for Contributions to OSUMB
