Ontheair communication between me and my pitcher and one good hack and the game was then in their hands." In two games this week — Shasta and Red Bluff — the Bobcats have scored 17 runs on 21 hits and col- lected 15 RBIs. "What we talked about is we weren't hitting at the beginning of the game. We're a much better hitting team as evidenced by what Baylee did," Dean said. "But we cannot come out flat (or) we'll lose against teams that we should beat." Paradise (18-10, 4-2 EASRL) resumes league at home against Chico (7-13, 3-3) at 6 p.m. Tuesday. "We can't take anybody lightly, we got to come out and battle," Dean said. Red Bluff battled for four innings, led in part by its freshman arm, Aubree Akins, who carried a three- hit shutout into the fifth. "(Akins) is very young but she's doing a good job for us," Thomas said. Offensively, the Spartans grabbed an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back hits from Akins and Elizabeth Bac- cala in the top of the first. Akins, the team's leading hitter coming in with a .298 average, delivered an RBI triple to left, scoring Allyson Drury, who led off the game with a walk. The next hitter, Baccala, sliced one to right for a single that plated Akins for a 2-0 lead. The early offensive burst also helped chase Paradise starter JoJo Kelly from the game as sophomore Savan- nah Berkowitz relieved the junior Durham transfer in the second. Berkowitz was nearly lights-out, firing six in- nings of two-run ball — one of which was earned — to keep the Bobcats in the game in time for Thay- er's emergence at the plate. "Take two pitches away and that game's in our fa- vor," Thomas said. Haylee and Jenna So- brero, the younger sisters to Paradise High product and North Dakota State se- nior center fielder Alex So- brero, joined Jenna Dor- ville and Thayer with multi-hit games. So ball FROM PAGE 1 But Hearns believes both fighters have to take risks they may not normally take, simply because of the magnitude of the rich- est fight ever. "Mayweather has no au- thority to be Mayweather," Hearns said. "He has to be defensive, but he has to be offensive, too. Peo- ple will be offended if he doesn't. People will lose their minds." Though Pacquiao is a free swinger who built a ca- reer on stopping people in the ring (he's got 38 knock- outs in 64 fights), May- weather prides himself on winning while not getting hit. That sometimes makes for a dull fight, something he may feel forced to try and avoid because of the massive $180 million pay- day he is expected to get. "Floyd Mayweather is going to try and take Manny Pacquiao's head off. You can count on that happening," Mayweather's promoter, Leonard Ellerbe said. "He'll do it in a man- ner where he follows a game plan, but Floyd May- weather is looking to fin- ish him off. I strongly be- lieve he will do just that." If Mayweather is un- characteristically aggres- sive, that could play into the hands of Pacquiao, who needs to be able to find Mayweather in the ring to beat him. Still, oddsmak- ers in this gambling town make it nearly 3-1 that the fight will end with a deci- sion. "We'll keep him guess- ing when we're coming and we're not coming," Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said. "Floyd will be overwhelmed by the foot speed and the hand speed of Manny Pacquiao." Pacquiao showed some power in his last fight, knocking Chris Algieri down six times in Macau on his way to a lopsided de- cision win. But he couldn't finish Algieri off, and faces a fare more difficult style against the elusive May- weather — one 47 other fighters have failed to fig- ure out before him. Former heavyweight champion George Foreman said Mayweather's tremen- dous counter-punching ability won't be enough for him to win the fight unless he engages Pacquiao more often than he has other fighters. "Pacquiao is really a pop shot artist," Foreman said. "It's hard to get a counter punch in on him, it's not that easy. Mayweather is by far a defensive genius but to win these rounds you're going to have to become an offensive fighter, too." Fight FROM PAGE 1 kind of old-school, get up on the wheel and make some stuff happen." Bowyer has been slump- ing this season with a Mi- chael Waltrip Racing team that is admittedly behind the competition. Stewart, though, has been relegated to the middle of the pack as teammates Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch have had some of the strongest cars each week. Stewart, a three-time champion, is simply strug- glingwiththerulespackage. "Part of this year, for me, is trying to get caught back up and to get back up to speed with the change in the rules package and the engine package," he said. "I'm used to driving re- ally high-horsepowered cars and when they took the horsepower away from us, that's something that was different for me. It's a matter of me changing my driving style to com- pensate for what the rules package is." Stewart is a three-time winner at Richmond, and Bowyer has two victories on the0.75-mile,D-shapedoval. Bothdriversconsiderittheir favorite on the circuit. "It'stheperfect-sizedtrack for a Cup race," Stewart said. "Itseemslikewehavetorace ourselves and race the race- track versus racing each other a lot of times." That's the same chal- lenge Bowyer enjoys, and one he feels gives him a chance on Saturday night. Team co-owner Michael Waltrip said this week the organization recognizes it's lagging in several areas — "we understand we are off a little bit, and we'll fix it," he said — and Bowyer be- lieves MWR is finally rec- ognizing where they need to make the most gains. "There's a little bit of an empty spot there, empty feeling like the tunnel is closing in early in the sea- son when you know you are way off," Bowyer said. "You have no idea how far off and you get to dig in, and then you are learn- ing and hearing where the Jones' are at and you real- ize you are quite a way off from them." Figuring out where the improvements must be made has been reassuring for Bowyer, who has spent the first two months of the season questioning him- self. "It's almost a relief be- cause anytime you are off the least little bit, you look at yourself," he said. A turning point was Bris- tol, where even though his No. 15 Toyota was off, he was able to drive his way through traffic and run in- side the top 10 before Ja- mie McMurray's blown tire ended his race. NASCAR FROM PAGE 1 who tied the game with a double earlier in the in- ning. Corey Dickerson added an RBI single. Colorado's bullpen made the lead hold up — with some anxious moments. Boone Logan struck out Brandon Crawford look- ing to end the eighth with a runner on third. Giants manager Bruce Bochy ar- gued the call and was ejected after a few words with plate umpire John Tumpane. Adam Ottavino pitched the ninth for his third save. Arenado turned in two more sensational plays against the Giants. The Gold Glove third base- man ranged far to his left to snare a chopper in the seventh, spun around and threw out Gregor Blanco. In the fourth, Arenado dove to his right to stop a grounder with runners on first and second and no outs. He scrambled to his feet, stepped on third base and fired to first to get Casey McGehee by a step. It neutralized a potential big inning. Arenado made quite a grab in San Francisco a week ago while falling over the tarp and rail in foul ter- ritory along the left-field line. Not to be outdone, Blackmon turned in quite a catch to end the third inning, when he caught a ball in right-center, turned and threw a strike to first base that doubled up An- gel Pagan, who figured the ball was headed for the gap. Blackmon then led off the bottom of the inning with a homer to straight- away center. Justin Maxwell hit a two-run homer in the sec- ond for San Francisco.
