Ontheair By Rick Eymer The Associated Press SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. Texas top prospect Joey Gallo hit a three-run homer off San Francisco's Jake Peavy, and the Rangers beat the Gi- ants 3-0 on Friday. Peavy allowed three runs and three hits in four innings. Rangers starter Nick Martinez, in the mix for a spot in the starting rota- tion, allowed two hits in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out four and didn't walk a bat- ter. Ross Detwiler, also a candidate for a starting spot with the Rangers, al- lowed two hits, walked one and struck out two in two scoreless innings. Peavy, who hit two bat- ters, got in trouble in the third after drilling Hanser Alberto leading off. Delino DeShields, who left the game because of tightness in his right hamstring, fol- lowed with a bunt single. One out later, Gallo hit Peavy's first pitch over the right field fence for his sec- ond homer of the spring. Joe Panik doubled and Buster Posey singled with one out in the first, the closest the Giants came to scoring. Brandon Belt tri- pled in the sixth but was thrown trying to score on a wild pitch. Startingtime Peavy said the impor- tant thing was being able to go four innings. It also allowed him a chance to bounce back after giving up the home run. "It felt good to get up and down four times and get into the swing of what a starter does," he said. "I was able to work through the lineup a couple of times." Peavy said he took a step forward with the outing. "I was able to repeat a lot of my pitches," he said. "It's nice to see the stuff coming around. It's fun to watch the process build." Trainer's room Yu Darvish is expected to return to camp follow- ing 'Tommy John' surgery on Tuesday. GIANTS SPRING TRAINING Peavy yields home run in defeat scored five runs in the top half of the third inning for a 10-0 lead. A Corning rally started brewing in the fourth in- ning when Aguirre was hit by a pitch to lead off and eventually scored after three straight singles from Michael Wold, Chris Prest and Drew Fissori. Corning would grab two more runs before Isiah Jones struck out to end the inning for a 10-3 score. Though only five games into the season, Tomlinson said his team's struggles are more mentally based, as it takes time for his play- ers to adjust and feel com- fortable again on the dia- mond. "The biggest thing is pitching and defense and right about now they're a little bit letting us down," he said. "Some of it is men- tal. They just have to get their heads back in the game a little bit. They need to work a little harder and hopefully it'll get better." Red Bluff went 2-0 on Day 1 of the tournament, beating Gridley 8-3 in the morning and handling American Christian Acad- emy in a 13-1 win in the af- ternoon. Sam Hendricks, Joseph Bosetti and Lane Pritchard split time on the mound for Red Bluff against Gridley. Ryan Gamboa went 3-for-4 with two doubles and knocked in a run. Lane Pritchard singled and doubled. Bryce Sinclair had a cou- ple of base hits and an RBI. Kolby Button, Hendricks and Walker Dodero also drove in runs. The Spartans beat ACA in five innings, scoring eight runs in the first inning. Pritchard hit a grand slam in the win. He also had two singles. Hendricks knocked in three runs on a single and a triple. Gamboa had a double. Button, Jack Murphy and Sinclair each drove in a run, and Sinclair had two hits. Wesley Clawson and Murphy split time on the mound. Clawson struck out seven batters in three in- nings to pick up the win. Red Bluff improved to 5-0 with the wins. Baseball FROM PAGE 1 played all year." "It is a complete misrep- resentation of who we are," he added, "and that's what we talked about at half- time. ... But to our guys' credit, they found a way to get back in it, in a big way." DeMarcus Cousins matched his season high of 39 points and added a career-high 24 rebounds for Sacramento. The Kings dropped to 22-42, guaran- teeing their ninth straight losing season. Rudy Gay had 24 points for Sacramento. The Kings led 73-55 with 8:46 left in the third quarter, but managed just two field goals the rest of the period, fueling a 33-9 flurry by the Sixers. Philadelphia's reserves accounted for the last 15 points in that stretch, giv- ing the 76ers an 88-82 lead at the end of the period. Smith was particu- larly effective, scoring five points in the last 3:09 of the period and setting up Hollis Thompson for a 3-pointer and Henry Sims for a layup. The Sixers then scored eight of the first 10 points in the fourth quarter as well, giving them a 96-84 lead with 8:41 left. Sacramento later cut the gap to 106-103. Then Smith found Noel for a dunk and made a pair of free throws. Smith finished with 10 points and nine assists in 25 minutes. "I was just playing," he said. "Sometimes I don't even know what I'm doing out there. I'm just going. ... Y'all are writing, 'What the (heck) is he doing? No won- der he's been on 25 teams.'" Smith signed with the Sixers on Feb. 22. They are his eighth team in five NBA seasons. Cousins had 22 and 15 rebounds in the first half, when the Kings erased an early nine-point deficit to claim a 64-51 halftime lead. Covington had 19 points in the first half for the Six- ers. Kings FROM PAGE 1 less driving. Justin Holiday led the makeshift Golden State lineup with a career-high 23 points and James Mi- chael McAdoo contributed 16. Gone with the five who sat was about 70 of the league-leading 109.6 points the Warriors are averaging this season. The Nuggets led most of the way until Golden State's cast rallied back. The Warriors took their first lead of the game on a dunk by McAdoo with 29 seconds left in the third quarter and increased the lead to seven points with 7:21 remaining. But Denver closed the game on a 25-7 run, with Foye leading the way from behind the 3-point line. He scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter as the Nuggets avenged a 122-79 at Golden State on Jan. 19, their worst loss of the sea- son. Not able to entertain the crowd with his sharp- shooting on the court, Curry did the next best thing during timeouts — he did some dancing. Curry also jumped up and cheered several times on big plays and even drew up a play on a marker board in the fourth quarter. The Nuggets were with- out Darrell Arthur (calf) and Ty Lawson (illness), but had rookie center Jusuf Nurkic back on the floor af- ter missing the last eight games with a sprained right ankle. He had four points in limited minutes. Danilo Gallinari added 24 points for the Nuggets. Kerr understands the criticism of resting his top players. He said he would be upset, too, if he was a fan and Curry sat out. "But I can't base my team's welfare on that," Kerr explained. "It's one of the reasons I do it on the road."
