The Associated Press LONG BEACH A 15-year- old boy walking home from school was stabbed to death for his backpack, California authorities said. Keshawn Brooks was as- saulted as the suspect tried to snatch his bag Thurs- day afternoon outside Ste- phens Middle School in Long Beach, police said. The suspect ran off. Brooks, a freshman at nearby Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo High School, was given first aid by witnesses before paramedics arrived. The teen was rushed to a hospital, where he was pro- nounced dead from serious stab wounds. After interviewing witnesses, investiga- tors named 18-year-old Giovanny Montelongo as a suspect. He was taken into custody Thursday evening at a Long Beach residence on suspicion of murder, said police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt. "This was a murder, done outright, and he did not deserve this," Brooks' father, Keeyon Layton, said at a Thursday evening press conference. "And to the people who came to his aid, I would like to thank you, very much. It pleases me that he was not alone during his time of death." CRIME Police: Boy stabbed to death for backpack The Associated Press LOS ANGELES While parts of the country are still feeling the brunt of win- ter, Southern California is headed into an overheated weekend that could bring record-breaking tempera- tures. Unfortunately for thou- sands of runners, the heat coincides with Sunday's an- nual LA Marathon, whose start time has been moved up by a half-hour to 6:55 a.m. Runners also will have access to ice, cold towels, misting stations and even "cooling buses." An enormous high-pres- sure ridge centered 800 miles offshore is moving toward the region, the Na- tional Weather Service said Thursday. The dome-like ridge will be right over Southern Cal- ifornia on Saturday and Sunday, with highs of 90 or above in Los Angeles and surrounding cities — some 20 degrees above normal for the period, said Stuart Seto with the weather ser- vice in Oxnard. The 90-degree high for downtown Los Angeles on Saturday is expected to beat a record for the date of 88 that was set in 1951, while Sunday's high of 89 should top the previous high of 85 recorded in 1978, Seto said. The region began warm- ing Thursday as offshore winds start heating things up, Seto said. Friday was expected to be warmer with winds continuing across Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Gusts of 30 to 40 mph were expected at the coast and in valleys with some 50-mph gusts in the mountains, ac- cording to a weather service forecast. Saturday and Sunday will be calm but scorching, forecasters said. It should be slightly cooler on Monday, but highs will still be well above nor- mal, according to the weather service. The weekend hot spell also won't do thirsty South- ern California any good. "The main thing about the heat is that it's going to ef- fect the evaporation at res- ervoirs ... and the snow- pack," Seto said. Enough rain can fall on part of the Northeast, Ohio Valley and central Appalachians to bring flooding problems. The flooding may be associated with ice jams on streams in the Northeast. Locally heavy thunder- storms can affect some communities along the southern Atlantic Seaboard. Snow and ice will occur over northern New England and northern upstate New York. Much of the Plains can expect another warm day with sunshine.
