ByRichGreene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter RED BLUFF Joseph Bosetti is staying close to his friends and family. The 6-foot, 5-inch Red Bluff Spartans senior signed his Na- tional Letter of Intent on Fri- day afternoon to attend Simp- son University in Redding. Bosetti said the school's prox- imity and a personal history of having family and friends at- tend the university led to his decision. Next year Bosetti will join a Red Hawks team that will be coming off of a successful season. The Red Hawks captured the National Christian College Ath- letic Association Division I West Region title last week and are headed to Indiana to play for a national championship. Simpson's head coach Jim Holcomb said the No. 1 attribute he saw in Bosetti was character. Holcomb said he looks for stu- dents who have good character, work hard in the classroom and will be good representatives for the Christian university. Holcomb cited his relation- ship with Red Bluff coach Stan Twitchell as one of the reasons he trusts he's getting a good player and man in Bosetti. Holcomb said the university's relationship with local coaches and players is extremely impor- tant, but it's something that he's working on making even better. Twitchell said Bosetti earned the chance to play in college because he worked on his pro- gression from a single-dimen- sional perimeter shooter to be- ing a physical presence inside and outside. He's a player who can beat big guys with quickness or pun- ish smaller defenders, Twitchell said. Bosetti led the Spartans in both scoring and offensive re- bounding this season. Bosetti offered some advice for younger players who hope to follow in his footsteps to the college level: "Always keep work- ing hard. The hard worker will always get the payoff in the end," he said. Bosetti is the son of Marty and Natasha. He has two sib- lings, Kaylee and Jacobb. The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA Philadelphia coach Brett Brown got mad. Then his team got even — and then some. With the 76ers trailing the Sacramento Kings by 13 points at halftime Friday night, Brown tore into his players. They responded, rallying from a deficit that reached 18 early in the third quarter for a 114-107 victory. Robert Covington scored 24 points and Nerlens Noel added 16 points and 12 rebounds to help the Sixers win for the second time in their last seven games. They are 15-50. THESCORE By Sharon Martin smartin@chicoer.com @SharonBMartin on Twitter OROVILLE Defensive woes and pitching struggles landed the Corning Cardinals on the losing end twice Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the 10th annual Oroville Varsity Baseball Tournament. The Cardinals dropped a 4-3 contest against Wheatland and later suffered a 10-4 defeat from the Shasta Wolves. "Right now we're just having a lot of trouble fielding the ball," Cardinals coach Tom Tomlinson said. "Both games, we're not play- ing very good defense and pitch- ing struggled." In game one against Wheat- land, Corning maintained a 3-1 lead until the Cardinals gave up two runs to the Pirates in the fifth inning. Wheatland took the lead after Dylan Cooper singled to cen- ter field to score Ryan Burdick from third for the go-ahead run. The Pirates would remain out front for the rest of the game. In game two against Shasta (3-3), a clean inning from Austin Fox to start the game would keep things scoreless until he found himself in trouble by the top half of the second inning. Noah Fergueson drew a lead- off walk, then advanced to third base on a throwing error by Fox that got by first baseman Joseph Aguirre. Fergueson scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch from Fox that went to the backstop. Two walks and a hit batsman later and Shasta had the bases loaded with nobody out, leading to a five-run inning and comfortable lead.
