Gentry leads the team in service percentage, is a key defensive special- ist and strong passer. By RICHGREENE DNSports Editor The third-seeded Mercy Lady Warriors swept their way into the Division-VI semifinals, Tuesday night, with a 25-9, 25-21, 25-19 win over sixth-seeded Redding Adven- tist. Mercy will head to No. 2 West- wood, Thursday night, with a spot in Saturday's section championship game on the line. Westwood held off No. 10 Lib- erty Christian in five games, Tues- day. The Lady Warriors roared out to a 9-3 game in the opener behind the service of Ella Fleet. Minutes later Mercy had a com- manding 17-8 lead and it kept growing from there as Breana Kemp sent in three consecutive aces and the Warriors cruised to take Game 1. The second game didn't start so well for the Lady Warriors, who fell behind 6-0 before Jennifer Gentry got Mercy on the scoreboard. Redding Adventist built up a 12- 5 lead, before Mercy coach Zane Zelei signaled for a time out. It would prove to be a turning point in the match. Mor- gan Hampton-Glines got a couple of crucial kills, Maggie Keller made several key blocks at the net and Mercy fought back to net things up at 13-13. From there the game went back- and-forth, until Hampton-Glines found an empty spot on the floor to break a 19-19 tie. Mercy held onto their lead from there and Keller delivered the match point. Game 3 was tied as late as 13-13, but once again Mercy broke it open with strong kills from Breana Kemp, Keller and Fleet set up by Kayce Kemp, who finished with 29 assists. Verlander wins ALCy Young in unanimous vote NEW YORK (AP) — There was little question Justin Verlander would unanimously win the AL Cy Young Award. Now, the far more intriguing question: Will he take the MVP, too? ''Do I think it's possible? Yes. Would I like to win it? Of course,'' he said during a conference call. ''It's kind of a weird scenario.'' No starting pitcher has won the MVP trophy since Roger Clemens in 1986, with Dennis Eckersley the last reliever to get it in 1992. Many say pitchers shouldn't win the MVP, period, con- tending they already have their own award. But Verlander's season — he won the pitching ver- sion of the Triple Crown, led Detroit to its first division crown in 24 years and drew every first-place vote Tues- day in the Cy Young race — has ratcheted up the debate in a crowded MVP field that includes Curtis Granderson, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jose Bautista, Miguel Cabrera and more. ''Pitchers are on the bal- lot,'' Verlander said. Bolster- ing the case for all pitchers, Verlander pointed to the ''tremendous effect we have on the day of our game.'' ''I'm so different from everybody,'' he said. If he doesn't win, Verlan- der said he'd like to see Granderson, his former teammate, get the award.
