Red Bluf 64f Las Plumas 7 ByRICHGREENE DN Sports Editor They had more lows than they would have liked, but the Red Bluff senior class ended their prep football careers with a big high, Friday night, routing Las Plumas 64-7 to finish league play at 2-2. "Amazing. I love winning," senior playmaker Ty Smith said after a three-touchdown perfor- mance. For the second consecutive week, the Spartans did just about everything right and for the second consecutive week they were rewarded on the scoreboard for their efforts. After dropping its first eight games of the season, Red Bluff won its final two games by the combined score of 120-20. It didn't take long for the Spartans to jump on the winless Thunderbirds as they marched 74 yards over nine plays on their opening posses- sion. Senior Michael Gonzales broke off a 35-yard run to set the Spartans up at the Las Plumas 5- yard line and Garrett Sandow connected with Smith on a 5-yard pass play for the game's first score. A fumbled punt return would eventually give the visiting Thunderbirds one of their few breaks in the game. Las Plumas quarterback Ricky Rodriguez took in a 2-yard keeper to square the game at 7-7 after he connected with Brendon Matheson on a 35-yard pass play. Red Bluff would score the remaining 57 points in the game. Not that they even needed that many as their defensive line was dominant throughout the game led by seniors Ryan Hassel, Jeff Skaggs, Garrett "I made more than friends out here. I made family." — senior center Ryan Hassel Spangler and junior Brandon Ragone. First, Smith would score on a 23-yard end- around. Then Tucker Gulliford forced a fumble recovered by senior Cody Case to give Red Bluff the ball back. Two plays later Tyler Reed took it in. The senior tail back ran had a strong game in the back- field and finished with 126 yards on just 10 car- ries. Red Bluff added one final score before half- time when Mitch Fox made a circus catch in the end zone to complete a 27-yard pass play from Sandow. With a 29-7 halftime lead the Spartans kept pushing for more. Smith intercepted a pass on the Thunderbirds' first possession of the third quarter. Gonzales then bulldozed his way over the Thunderbirds defense to make it 36-7. Spangler recovered another Las Plumas fum- ble then had the worst moment of the night for Red Bluff. The likable senior came down awkwardly on his leg in the end zone going up for a reception and suffered a major leg injury. Spangler was carted off the field. He signaled a thumbs up to his teammates and those in the bleachers as he left. After the lengthy delay, Reed took the next hand off and darted in from 34 yards out. Smith would cap his phenomenal year with a highlight reel touchdown, leaping over a pair of Las Plumas defenders at the goal line for his third score of the game. Kyle Case carried six times for 66 yards and he made sure one of them counted when he brought it in from 17 yards out for yet another Spartans score. Red Bluff forced another Las Plumas fumble in the waning minutes, which gave senior Brad Raines the opportunity to score the game's final touchdown. Senior Niklas Ericsson converted all seven of his extra point opportunities. Reed also kicked one and the Spartans converted a 2-point conver- sion along the way. It was an emotional end for the Spartans' seniors. "We came together as a team," Hassel said. "I made more than friends out here. I made family." Reed's 126 yards led the Spartans. Smith had 68 yards on the ground and two catches for 23 yards. Kyle Case had his 66 and Gonzales finished with 50 yards on four carries. Gulliford had an 11-yard carry Raines and Sandow each had five yards. Sandow went 3-for-9 for 50 yards and two touchdowns. While Sandow will be back next year to guide a Spartans team entering the season on a two- game winning streak, Friday night was a time to reflect on the seniors. For John Miller it was the first class of players he had coached for their two years at the varsity level. "Two years ago when I took over, how the (then) juniors received me with open arms and we're going to do whatever I asked of them — it's going to be something always special in my life," he said. "We've had our knocks over the last two years, but these guys have stepped it up. They've been loyal teammates to each other, they've been loyal to the coaches and it's a testament to the way their parents have raised them." Early mistakes cost Warriors Corning nabs A series of onside kick recoveries and poor snaps doomed the Warriors from the get-go, Saturday, in a 56- 14 loss to Hayfork on Senior Day. Mercy fell down a quick 16 points, before Matt Mis- ener scored on a 58-yard run. Hayfork and the Warriors traded touchdowns again with Misener scoring a sec- ond time for Mercy. Senior Jordan Stasinowky convert- ed the two-pointer to make it 24-14. However, the Timber- jacks would return the ensu- ing kickoff then score on their opening drive of the second half to seal the win. Mercy finished the sea- son 1-8. No. 3 seed Ryan Holland ran for 283 yards on 12 carries and made 15 tackles on defense to lead Corning to a 54-30 win over Winters, Friday night. The Cardinals 7-3 season was rewarded with the the No. 3 seed on Saturday when the playoff pairings were announced. Corning will host Wheatland 7 p.m., Thurs- day. Holland had three touch- downs against Winters. J.D. Whited added two more. Ezekiel Rodriguez scored and made an inter- ception.
