Monday, November 7, 2011 – Daily News ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece's embattled prime min- ister and main opposition leader agreed Sunday to form an inter- im government to ensure the country's new European debt deal and oversee early elections, capping a week of political tur- moil that saw Greece facing a catastrophic default and threat- ening its euro membership. Greek leaders had been anx- ious to end a severe political cri- sis with some positive result before Monday, when the coun- try heads to a meeting of euro- zone finance ministers in Brus- sels. The initial agreement, which will see Prime Minister George Papandreou step down, came after a week of drama sparked by his announcement he was taking the debt deal to a ref- erendum. He withdrew that plan Thursday after intense opposi- tion from European leaders and his own Socialist lawmakers, many of whom called for him to resign. Papandreou ''has already stated he will not lead the new government,'' the statement from the president's office said. He is to meet again Monday with opposition leader Antonis Samaras to seek agreement on who will head the new govern- ment and who will be included in its Cabinet, the president's office said. A planned meeting with the leaders of all political parties represented in parliament, which was to take place Mon- day evening, was canceled after parliament's two leftist parties refused to attend, the office said. The statement came after a late-night meeting between Papandreou and Samaras called by President Karolos Papoulias to end a two-day deadlock. Direct talks had failed to get off the ground as Papandreou had agreed to step aside but only after power-sharing talks settled on a new government makeup, and Samaras insisted he wanted snap elections and would not start negotiations unless Papan- dreou resigned first. An opposition conservative party official said Samaras' party is ''absolutely satisfied'' with the outcome of the talks and that party officials were to SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The revolution will be trademarked and put on T-shirts if an increasing number of entrepreneurs succeed in their attempts to profit from the Occupy demonstrations. A few T-shirts began to appear several days after the first protest began on Sept. 17 with a march through the streets of lower Manhattan. Now, T-shirts, coffee mugs and other merchan- dise emblazoned with Occupy locations and slo- gans are being offered online and amid the camp sites that have sprung up in cities across the coun- try. A number of merchandise vendors, clothing designers and others are making plans to market a wide-variety of goods for a wide-variety of reasons even as some protesters decry the business plans as directly counter to the demonstrations' goals. In recent weeks, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has received a spate of applications from enterprising merchandisers, lawyer and others seeking to win exclusive commercial rights to such phrases as ''We are the 99 percent,'' ''Occupy'' and ''Occupy DC 2012.'' Organizers of the protest centered in Manhat- tan's Zuccotti Park went so far as to file for a trade- mark of ''Occupy Wall Street'' after several other applications connected to the demonstrations were filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Wylie Stecklow, a lawyer representing the pro- testers, said the Oct. 24 filing was done to prevent profiteering from a movement many say is a protest of corporate greed. ''I would like to ensure that this isn't coopted for commercial purposes,'' Stecklow said. ''The trade- mark can be used for noncommercial purposes.'' Stecklow's application was one of three filed with the U.S. PTO seeking to trademark either ''Occupy Wall Street'' or ''Occupy Wall St.'' hold meetings late Sunday night with Finance Minister Evange- los Venizelos and his advisers to discuss how long it would take to finalize the new debt deal and when elections could be held. ''Our two targets, for Mr. Papandreou to resign and for elections to be held, have been met,'' the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the process. The crisis was sparked after Papandreou's shock announce- ment on Oct. 31 that he wanted to put a new European debt deal aimed at rescuing his country's economy to a referendum. That plan caused an uproar in Europe, with the leaders of France and Germany saying any popular vote in Greece would decide whether the country would remain in the euro. Euro- pean officials also said the coun- try would not receive the vital (euro) 8 billion euro installment of its existing (euro) 110 billion bailout until the uncertainty in Athens was over. Papandreou's announcement also spooked international mar- kets, leading stock markets to Occupy protests inspires T-shirts, trademark bids Vince Ferraro, a small businessman based in Arizona, applied to trademark ''Occupy Wall Street'' a few hours after Stecklow. Ferraro declined to discuss his plans if he wins the trade- mark. ''If I prevail,'' he said, ''I believe there are opportunities in commerce not directly related to the movement.'' Both Stecklow and Ferraro were beat to the trademark office by a Long Island couple who filed for ''Occupy Wall St.'' on Oct. 16. Robert and Diane Maresca paid $975 for the application, which said they intended to put the phrase on a wide-variety of products. They couldn't be reached for comment. But on Thursday, the couple withdrew their application, leaving Stecklow's clients and Ferraro as the only two competing to own ''Occupy Wall Street.'' USPTO lawyer Cynthia Lynch said that when the trademark office is confronted with similar applications, it gives priority to the first application received. However, she said the trademark office also takes into consideration whether the phrase was in wide use before the first application was filed. Stecklow, the attorney for the protesters, says he believed his clients will prevail because they've been using the phrase ''Occupy Wall Street'' for months before the first application was filed. The USPTO's Lynch declined to discuss specif- ic applications and said it takes about three months for the office to make an initial determination. ''This rush to trademark was entirely expected and predictable because this is what everybody does,'' said Ron Coleman, a trademark attorney and author of a popular trademark blog. ''The irony is too rich.'' tumble and led to calls in Greece for Papandreou's resig- nation — even from among his own Socialist lawmakers and ministers — with many saying he had endangered Greece's bailout. The prime minister withdrew the referendum plan on Thurs- day, after Samaras indicated his party would back the new debt deal, which was agreed upon after marathon negotiations in Europe on Oct. 27. Greece has been surviving since May 2010 on its initial bailout. But its financial crisis was so severe that a second res- cue was needed as the country remained locked out of interna- tional bond markets by sky-high interest rates and facing an unsustainable national debt increase. The new European deal, agreed on by the 27-nation bloc on Oct. 27 after marathon nego- tiations, would give Greece an additional (euro) 130 billion ($179 billion) in rescue loans and bank support. It would also see banks write off 50 percent of Greek debt, worth some 5B Initial agreement reached in Greece power-sharing (euro) 100 billion ($138 bil- lion). The goal is to reduce Greece's debts to the point where the country is able to handle its finances without rely- ing on constant bailouts. Greece's lawmakers must now approve the new rescue deal, putting intense pressure on the country's leaders to swiftly end the political crisis so parlia- ment can convene and put the debt agreement to a vote. ''We know that there can be no elections now,'' Papandreou had said during an earlier emergency Cabinet meeting, noting that snap polls would delay the approval of the new debt deal. ''This cooperation, however, is necessary and will be beneficial for the climate in our country and international- ly.'' In return for bailout money, Greece was forced to embark on a punishing program of tax increases and cuts in pensions and salaries that sent Papan- dreou's popularity plummeting and his majority in parliament whittled down from a comfort- able 10 seats to just three. JoePa: Shocked, saddened by Penn State sex abuse charges STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State coach Joe Paterno said he's shocked by sexual abuse charges brought against former defensive coordinator Jerry San- dusky and deeply saddened by the allegations. Paterno in a statement issued Sunday evening by his son, Scott, said he's troubled that someone he thought he knew may have harmed young people. Paterno said he and wife, Sue have devoted their lives to helping young people reach their potential. ''The fact that someone we thought we knew might have harmed young people to this extent is deeply troubling,'' he said. ''If this is true we were all fooled, along with scores of professionals trained in such things, and we grieve for the victims and their families. They are in our prayers.'' Paterno referred to his grand jury testimony in which he testified that he was informed by an assis- tant coach in 2002 that he had wit- nessed an incident in the shower of the team locker room. Prosecutors have said Paterno had passed on the information to athletic director Tim Curley. But Paterno said specific actions alleged to have occurred in the grand jury report were not relayed to him. ''It was obvious that the witness was distraught over what he saw, but he at no time related to me the very specific actions contained in the grand jury report,'' Paterno said in the statement. ''Regardless, it was clear that the witness saw something inappropriate involving Mr. Sandusky.''
