ByRichGreene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter CORNING RaulArent'sstrikein the 39th minute turned out to be enough Tuesday as the top- seeded Corning Cardinals beat visiting Sutter 1-0 in the Divi- sion 2 boys soccer semifinals. Meanwhile with the roles re- versed in Sutter, the top-seeded Lady Huskies beat the Lady Car- dinals 1-0 in the Division 2 girls bracket. Arent's winner came late in the first half as Corning con- trolled play, but hadn't found a way to get the ball into the back of the net. But after a flurry of activity from the Corning attackers, a cleared ball sat just inside the penalty box. Arent rushed on to it and booted it low, skipping across the ground, and past the Sutter keeper for what would prove the game-winner. "It's like a memory already," Arent said. "I shot it. It went in — bottom corner — man, I slid and I got goose bumps all over me. It's crazy and now we're go- ing to the section finals." Sutter's chances were few and far between. Their best came in the 33rd minute on a 45-yard free kick that Corning goalie Luis Lu- evano had to punch over the bar. For the most part the Cardi- nals' backline of Jose Reyes, Jose Gonzalez and Osvaldo Ochoa had a solid game and Luevano was rarely threatened. Corning dominated most as- pects of the game, the only piece lacking was finishing in the fi- nal third. Salvador Mora and Cristiano Loera had strong stretches where they controlled the ball and Eric Figueroa was just sec- onds and inches off on a handful of scoring opportunities. Arent, a sophomore, said he wanted to dedicate his goal to his senior teammates. For the Corning seniors it will be one last opportunity to achieve one of the few things they have yet to accomplish — a section title. The last four years the Cardi- nals have amassed a record of 65-9-6, winning four straight Northern Athletic League ti- tles. As freshmen they lost to Las Plumas in a section final de- termined by penalty kicks and as sophomores played up in Di- vision 1, losing to Chico in the final. Last year Corning was 18- 0-2 when they were shocked by Gridley 1-0 in the semifi- nals. Corning will get its rematch with Gridley at noon Saturday, after the Bulldogs beat Orland 3-1 Tuesday in the other Division 2 semifinal. Gridley and Orland both beat Corning earlier this year as the Cardinals started just 2-2, be- fore starting their current 17- game unbeaten streak. The streak started after Grid- ley rocked Corning 5-1 on Dec. 10. Corning didn't play again until after the holiday break, when they went on to win Nor Cal Champions Cup hosted by Shasta, beating both the hosts and Chico — both D-1 semifi- nalists. Their only blemish since was a 2-2 draw with Yreka. "It means a lot I get another chance to win it," senior cap- tain Loera said. "In my four years we've made it far, but we just haven't won it. I get another chance at that." Red Bluff, like so many foes who faced the Vikings this sea- son, knows that all too well by now. Armando Ramirez scored the second goal, Adrian Jau- regui made it 3-0 in the 29th minute, and not that the Vi- kings needed them, but two own goals by Red Bluff in the second half led to another 7-0 playoff romp for unbeaten Pleasant Valley. Curry returned from a one- game absence to lead all scorers with 32 points, Klay Thompson added 17 more and the Golden State Warriors defeated the Wash- ington Wizards, 114-107. Curry missed Sunday's loss at Indiana with the sore foot and played nearly 34 minutes. He hit 11 of 18 field goal attempts — many with impressive degrees of difficulty — including five of nine from 3-point range. "It's good to have Steph Curry back doing what he does," Thomp- son said. "Mesmerizing the crowd, mesmerizing us and keeping us in the first half." Curry played all but four sec- onds of the first quarter, scoring 13 points, as the Warriors rallied from an early deficit. By Janie McCauley The Associated Press SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. Nori Aoki has reconsidered his original plan to wrestle big ace Madison Bumgarner. "Maybe after practice," he cracked, chuckling while sitting at his locker before the San Fran- cisco Giants hit the field for their first full-squad workout. A few hours later after see- ing Bumgarner in person, he had changed his tune completely. No way, not happening. Shortstop Brandon Crawford could have told his new teammate that much. Crawford had already planned to advise him against taking on the 6-foot-5, 235-pound reigning World Series MVP. "That would probably be my advice, don't do it," Crawford said. "If he is going to do it, I'd go for the hair if I was him. That's his weak spot, that's his Achilles' heel." Center fielder Angel Pagan put his money on his outfield mate, even if at 5-9 and 180 pounds, Aoki has a serious size disadvan- tage. "That's my way to win against Bumgarner," Aoki said.
