Red Bluff High School will stage Arthur Mill- er's play "The Crucible" at 6 p.m. Thursday and Fri- day, Feb. 26 and 27 in the Performing Arts Center on campus. Tickets are $3 each. Miller's classic is set in Salem, Mass., 1692, when it was still possible for a court to convict a witch. Twenty innocent peo- ple — mostly women — were hanged for invisible crimes. The evidence on which they were tried was equally invisible. Miller wrote the play to show the dangerous forces that were at work in Amer- ica during the Red Scare, a time in which The House Un-American Activities Committee investigated suspected communists. Many innocent lives were destroyed in the hysteria. Once named, the ac- cused could never be free of the suspicion of hav- ing committed invisible crimes. And the accusers profited monstrously hav- ing so bewitched their en- emies. The actors and actresses have worked hard to bring this play to life for the com- munity, and have consis- tently impressed the fac- ulty with their maturity, insight and work ethic. The cast includes Proc- tor: Sam Story; Rev. Hale: Evan Meagher; Parris: Devin Schoelen; Fran- cis Nurse: Victor Ibarra; Judge Danforth: Tanner Durfeel; Giles Corey: Jay Woods; Thomas Putnam: Grace Ashworth; Cheever: Danny Ramirez; Judge Ha- thorne: John Foley; Wil- lard: Kaylie Doebel; Hop- kins: Donovan Gibson; Ab- igail Williams: Jenny Muto; Elizabeth Proctor: Rebecca Blanchard; Rebecca Nurse: Maryn Spangler; Ann Put- nam: Grace Gwaltney; Tit- uba: Hailey Isaacson; Mary Warren: Jodie Capps; Betty Parris: Hanna Huhn; Mar- tha Corey: Fatima Mon- tes; Mercy Lewis: Melinda Rudnick; Susanna Wal- cott: Kyleigh Lovett; Sarah Good: Meg Howarth; Girl of The Court: Ana Servin. Red Bluff celebrated the opening of the Panama- Pacific International Ex- position yesterday at nine a.m. by ringing all of the bells and blowing all of the available whistles in town. This form of cele- bration was used in prac- tically every town in the state. The celebration here was an impromptu af- fair and the public re- ceived no advance no- tice of it. As a result the larger portion of the res- idents of the town were not sure whether Mt. Las- sen had started spouting lava or the town was on fire. Several persons who had been sleeping late af- ter the ball game hastily donned a few garments and made preparations to flee for their lives. — Feb. 21, 1915 100 YEARS AGO...
