ByMarilynAdams Discouragement comes in a myr- iad of ways. Have you ever been dis- appointed, demor- alized, disheart- ened, down cast, de- pressed, bummed out, or felt crushed in your spirit? I don't know any- one who has not experi- enced any one of the above emotions. What do you do when you feel discouraged? Re- playing the scene in your mind doesn't help. It is fu- tile and builds ruts in your mind. Berating yourself or taking it out on others doesn't relieve the pres- sure of the broken expec- tation. You might turn to something that will drown out the feelings. That is only a temporary fix. It may work for the moment, but it creates a spiraling down into deeper depres- sion, anxiety, guilt and hopelessness. There is a better way. What are your thought patterns? What do you think about the most? How do you view your- self? Our thoughts are the key to bringing us out of the downward spiral. There is a proverb in the Bible that helps us under- stand this principle. Prov- erbs 23:7 says, "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." We become what we think about. What do you believe about your- self? Do you have purpose in your life? Do you want an ef- fective solution that will carry you through ev- ery day in vic- tory? God is your way to vic- tory. God's way is perfect. That means it is so excellent it cannot be improved upon. God has a purpose for your life. He created you in His own image. He de- signed you, He knows ev- ery thought you think be- fore you think it, and He loves you unconditionally. John 16:33 says, "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have trib- ulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." Luke 4:18 says that Je- sus came to heal the bro- ken hearted, oppressed, downtrodden, bruised, crushed, and broken down by life's circumstances. Je- sus is the only One who can heal. He can set your heart free from the things of your past that have weighed you down, and caused the depression, anxiety, guilt, and hope- lessness. Through Christ we find victory for our bro- kenness. In Matthew 11:29 Jesus says, "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." 1 John 5:4-5 tells us that our victory and rest is in the Son of God who helps us to overcome. Jesus was born to die. He came to take your place. He humbled Him- self to bear all your past, present, and future sins. He also bore the sins of those done against you. Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eter- nal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." He paid your full price in His death. He made the way for sin to be forgiven in all its forms. Every individual is a sinner. That is why Jesus came, because we were to- tally alienated from God. There was no way we could have lived eternally with Him. He loved us enough to make the way. The question is: will you receive or reject what He did for you? Romans 10:9- 10 says, "That if you con- fess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." MarilynAdamsaccepted the Jesus Christ as her per- sonal Savior in 1958. A de- bilitating accident in 1977 radically changed her life. Through that crucible of affliction, the Lord wooed her into an intimate re- lationship with Him. He taught her timeless truths that sustain her, and still permeate her present teachings. GOD TALK Triumphing over discouragement Adams Corning's Presbyterian Church is launching a week- day Bible study for local res- idents of all denominations. The study sessions will be led by the Rev. Julia Horne at 10 a.m. each Wednesday at the church, at 471 Mar- guerite Ave. The program begins on Feb. 25 with a 12-week study of the Minor Prophets of the Old Testament. The initial program will be followed in subsequent months by top- ical studies which will ex- plore various groupings of other chapters in both the Old and New Testament. Horne has started the study group in response to a request from local residents who are seeking a better understanding of the Bible. "The first session, 'The Minor Prophets: God Still Speaks Today,' will focus on some of the Biblical figures who are not as well known as the major prophets, but who have important teach- ings to offer." The church is schedul- ing it during the week in order to give Christians a chance to engage in some thoughtful contemplation and study beyond the tra- ditional Sunday service, which is built around a pastoral sermon. Horne is an ordained pastor who attended the Pa- cific School of Religion. She has served a number of val- ley churches and has been serving as the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church for the past year. More in- formation can be obtained from her at 321-6769. FULL GOSPEL Cr an da ll Br ot her s to p er fo rm M ar ch 1 i n Co rn in g The Associated Press CHICAGO The longtime head of a suburban Chi- cago Islamic school has been charged with sexu- ally assaulting a woman who worked there, and a civil suit filed Tuesday ac- cuses him of abusing that employee and three teenage students. The legal actions shed light on an issue that even many Muslims say is too often pushed into the shadows within their com- munities. Mohammad Abdullah Saleem, 75 — who founded the Institute of Islamic Ed- ucation and is regarded as a leading Islamic scholar, or imam, in the United States — is charged with felony criminal sexual abuse. Pros- ecutors said he abused the 23-year-old woman, an ad- ministrative assistant at the Elgin school, in a series of escalating incidents over months. The civil suit accuses Saleem of abusing that em- ployee, as well as three fe- male students at the school as far back as the 1980s. The lawyer in that case, Steven Denny, said Saleem took advantage of both the trust accorded to him as a religious leader and of the tendency of Muslims to re- main silent on matters of sex and sexual abuse. "This place was ripe for abuse," Denny told a news conference. It took special courage, he added, for his clients to come forward within a cul- ture that discourages even casual contact — never mind explicit sexual con- tact. The suit says a fifth per- son was abused when he was 11 by a male staffer at the school, not Saleem. It accuses the school of failing to protect children, many of whom lived on campus. It asks for more than $1.5 mil- lion in compensation, say- ing the victims are psycho- logically scarred. Defense attorney Thomas Glasgow said he talked to his client about the Elgin charges and that Saleem "categorically denies the allegations." He hadn't had a chance to speak to him about the lawsuit. No one answered the phone Tues- day at the school. CHICAGO AREA Imam charged with sex abuse at Islamic school Tehama County Church Directory RedBluff....
