MARKETING/SALES Hal Nunn ASSOCIATE EDITOR Stephanie Crider PUBLISHER Bill Bowman INSIDE PUBLISHER'S PEN by BILL BOWMAN Heroes Homecoming is going to be an exciting 10 days. I do not profess to be a hero in any sense of the word, however, I am a Vietnam veteran, Chu Lai Class of '67. And, like many other veterans of this era, I have worn my honor and patriotism in somber silence for more than 40 years. No regrets. Truth be known, except for a patch on my motorcycle jacket, my 29-year-old son is not even aware I was there. So, this concept and celebration of Heroes Homecoming is long overdue, and this community newspaper serves to celebrate and honor these dedicated men and women. However, last Sunday morning as I drove down Hay Street from Haymount toward downtown Fayetteville, I couldn't help but agree with local businessman and entrepreneur Peter Stewart, that the current Fayetteville City sign ordinances, as outlined in the Unifi ed Development Ordinance (UDO) may be just a bit restrictive and outrageous not to mention stifl ing and ridiculous. Signs on vehicles larger than eight square feet cannot be parked within 50 feet of right of way. This is a not too subtle reminder that government at all levels does not understand "doing business" as it pertains to marketing, advertising, promoting and generating revenue and profi ts. Processes which, by the way, generate income and tax revenues. Hmmmmm? Well, so much for bureaucratic logic. Fayetteville's Weather Forecast November 4 Thursday November 3 Saturday November 5 Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Friday So, what was it I saw driving down Hay Street that had to do with our community's upcoming Heroes Homecoming celebration? Nothing. I saw nothing, except a lost opportunity. We will celebrate and welcome home our Vietnam Veterans next week in a self-imposed, muffl ed and stifl ed silence as they enter our city. No brightly colored "Welcome Home" banners hung over our streets and city gateways. No fl ags fl ying and lining the streets or familiar patriotic red, white and blue bunting adorning public and private buildings. Why? Because they are not allowed by the UDO. The near-perfect example that we have way too much government in our lives. It is times like these when we should be going all out to celebrate and decorate, but instead, we fi nd ourselves victims of our own bureaucracy. Less is more and we sure could use less government regulation. Now, that would also be something to celebrate! That being said, nothing regulates how we celebrate at Up & Coming Weekly, so inside, fi nd out all the need-to- know information about the upcoming 10 days. Then get a good night's sleep — you're going to need it! P.S. Don't celebrate more than two hours or you could also get a parking ticket.
