Young Farmer of the Year Named T
he 2011 Cumberland County Young Farmer and Rancher of the Year has been named by the North Carolina Farm Bureau. William John Gillis, an eighth generation farmer, received the award Monday, Oct.

After college, Gillis began farming in partnership with his father and brother on their 200-acre row crop farm in western Cumberland County — continuing a family agricultural tradition that goes back to the 1700s. Gillis has expanded the family farm from corn and soybeans to wheat, which had not been grown on the farm before. Gillis has also expanded the family's beef operation. The Gillis farm has also entertained thousands of school children
