4A Daily News – Thursday, October 27, 2011 Pastimes Chang at the Humanities Center The Humanities Center Gallery, Trinity 100 on the CSU, Chico cam- pus, presents an exhibition of paintings by Chico artist Chunhong Chang. The exhibition will be on view Nov. 1 – Dec. 15. A reception will take place at the gallery on Thursday, Dec. 15, 5 – 7 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The Humanities Center Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. This exhibition is in conjunction with the 2011–2012 Humanities Cen- ter theme, China and the West. Chunhong Chang describes her work: I am influenced by traditional painting, from Dutch still-life art of the 16th and 17th centuries to landscape, flower and bird paintings of the Tang and Sung Dynasties in China. I often juxtapose a scene influenced by eastern art with a still life painted in the western classical tradition. This is done on a hardwood box with an inset area, which gives me two planes on which to paint the different styles. I preserve the differ- ent qualities from the east and the west, and celebrate both cultures' traditional senses of beauty, while creating conso- nance and congruence between the images through composition and color of the painting. I use organic elements to represent the eternal beauty of our world and seek to visually show the essence of our existence. I draw forth connections and compatibility between cultures.
