The Associated Press RENO, NEV. A popular cross-country ski area near Lake Tahoe has temporarily closed due to a lack of snow, and forecasters say the lin- gering drought should per- sist or get worse in the months ahead across most of California and Nevada. Tahoe Donner Cross Country spokeswoman Sally Jones says they've done their best to try to keep the trails open for ski- ing and snowshoeing in the Sierra near Truckee, Cali- fornia. But she says all pro- grams, clinics and events have been suspended until there's improvement in the snow and ice conditions. Most of the region has experienced dry and un- usually warm conditions for about a month. The mercury soared to 66 de- grees in Reno on Sun- day, tying the record set in 1971. The National Weather Service anticipates more above-normal temperatures headed into February and the U.S. Drought Monitor foresees little relief from the drought now headed into a fourth season. "Subnormal precipitation is anticipated throughout the West Coast states, west- ern Arizona and most of Ne- vada," the monitor said ear- lier this week. Its seasonal outlook through April 30 forecasts the drought will persist or intensify across all but about the southern- most quarter of Nevada, where some improvement is possible. A monthly snowpack survey near the south end of Lake Tahoe in late De- cember showed a snow depth of about 21 inches, with 4 inches of water con- tent — roughly 33 percent the norm for this time of year. The last precipitation at Reno-Tahoe International Airport occurred Dec. 30, when 1.8 inches of snow carrying .06 inches of wa- ter fell, according to the National Weather Service office in Reno. The last siz- able storm there occurred Dec. 2, when .62 inches of rain was recorded. Kelly Redmond of Re- no's Western Regional Cli- mate Center, said a familiar pattern has a ridge of high pressure stubbornly sitting off the West Coast, pushing the jet stream north and shouldering any storms that do develop in the Pa- cific far to the north. While some models suggest a pat- tern shift might occur late in the month, he said noth- ing different is expected anytime soon. "These kind of situations can have a pretty remark- able staying power. We've already seen it the last win- ter or two and it looks like we're seeing it again," Red- mond told the Reno Ga- zette-Journal. "It looks like January could finish up just like what you're seeing out your window right now." Scott McGuire, a weather service meteorologist, said that while January tends to be the biggest month for snow and rain in the area, a few big storms still could boost the snowpack in Feb- ruary and March. "Things can change pretty quickly and it only takes a handful of big storms," McGuire said. "All we can do is keep our fin- gers crossed for an active February and March." LINGERING DROUGHT Lackofsnowsuspendscross-countryskiingnearTahoe The Associated Press LOS ANGELES A $170,000 reward was offered Wednesday for informa- tion that leads to the per- son responsible for ignit- ing a huge inferno that destroyed an unfinished apartment building and ex- tensively damaged adjacent office towers in downtown Los Angeles. The reward, announced by officials at a news confer- ence outside City Hall, will include $75,000 each from the city and the building de- veloper, and $20,000 from the federal Bureau of Alco- hol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The City Council must formally approve its contri- bution at Friday's meeting. Carlos A. Canino, special agent in charge of the ATF Los Angeles field division, said it's the largest reward he's seen in 25 years with the bureau. "I think it's unprece- dented and the reason it's unprecedented is because of the magnitude of this fire," he said. The Dec. 8 fire gutted the 1.3 million-square-foot Da Vinci complex, which was in the wood-framing stage when it went up like a mas- sive bonfire visible for miles across the city. The heat was so intense that it cracked or shattered hundreds of windows in neighboring office build- ings, igniting small fires in one of them, and damaged an adjacent freeway where traffic was brought to a halt. Despite the intensity no one was hurt. Damage was estimated at $20 million to $30 mil- lion. Fire Chief Ralph Terra- zas called it one of the larg- est structure fires his de- partment has battled in a generation, and required the commitment of more than a third of the city's on- duty personnel.
