Thursday, October 13, 2011 – Daily News WORLD BRIEFING 6 killed, 3 wounded in shooting at So Cal salon SEAL BEACH (AP) — Six people were killed and three were wounded Wednesday in a shooting at a hair salon in a nor- mally sedate Southern California beach commu- nity, authorities said. The six deaths were confirmed and the other three victims were taken to a hospital in critical condition, police Sgt. Steve Bowles told KCAL- TV. Police arrested a man in a traffic stop a half- mile from the shooting scene and he was taken into custody, Bowles said. He added that multiple weapons were seized. The motive was not immediately known. The shooting was reported at 1:21 p.m. in a cluster of small business- es on Pacific Coast High- way. Iran's amateur-hour plot shows inexperience WASHINGTON (AP) — The alleged Iranian plot against the Saudi ambassador to Washing- ton was ''amateur hour,'' an unusually clumsy operation for Iran's elite foreign action unit, the Quds Force, U.S. officials said Wednesday as further stranger-than-fiction details emerged of the assassination gone wrong. The Iranians' would-be covert operative turned to a woman he met while working as a used car dealer, hoping to find a Mexican drug dealer- assassin, and wound up with an American infor- mant instead, according to two U.S. law enforcement officials. Other U.S. officials said Manssor Arbabsiar made further mistakes, including arranging a pay-off for the attack in an easily traceable way. They attributed the missteps to Iran's relative inexperience carrying out covert operations in the United States and Mexi- co. They said the U.S. believes the planned attack on the Saudi ambassador was con- ceived in part as proof that such an operation could be carried off. Then, perhaps, Iran would have followed up with a series of attacks against other embassies in the U.S. and in Argentina, officials said. Nigerian man pleads guilty in underwear bomb plot DETROIT (AP) — A Nigerian man pleaded guilty Wednesday to try- ing to bring down a jetlin- er with a bomb in his underwear, defiantly telling a federal judge that he acted in retaliation for the killing of Muslims worldwide and referring to the failed explosive as a ''blessed weapon.'' Umar Farouk Abdul- mutallab, who acknowl- edged working for al- Qaida and never denied the allegations, entered the plea against his attor- ney's advice on the sec- ond day of his trial. He stands to get a mandatory life sentence for the 2009 attack that aimed to kill nearly 300 people on Christmas Day in the skies above Detroit. Abdulmutallab calmly answered the judge's questions and read a polit- ical statement warning that if the United States continues ''to persist and promote the blasphemy of Muhammad and the prophets,'' it risks ''a great calamity ... through the hands of the muja- hedeen soon.'' ''If you laugh at us now, we will laugh at you later on the day of judg- ment,'' he said. Abdulmutallab sug- gested more than a year ago that he wanted to plead guilty but never did. He dropped his four-per- son, publicly financed defense team in favor of representing himself with help from a prominent local lawyer appointed by the court, Anthony Cham- bers. Next moves uncertain on jobs bill after Senate GOP kills it WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and his Democ- ratic allies in the Senate promise additional votes on pieces of the presi- dent's $447 billion jobs bill, but how those pieces might be arranged and when the votes might be taken is up in the air. The jobs package died Tuesday at the hands of Senate Republicans, but Obama and his Senate Democratic supporters promise to force votes on items such as infrastruc- ture spending, jobless assistance, aid to local governments, and tax cuts for individuals and busi- nesses that were major parts of the massive bill. Obama's top ally in the Senate says it's unclear which items will get votes. ''I'm not positive at this time what piece of the president's bill we're going to do,'' Majority Leader Harry Reid, D- Nev., said. Instead Reid said the chamber will first debate a bundle of appropriations bills setting next year's budgets for the depart- ments of Commerce, Agriculture, Transporta- tion, and Housing and Urban Development. That's likely to consume next week. And with the chamber taking a vacation at the end of the month, it appears that it'll be November at the earliest before any pieces of Obama's jobs package get a re-vote. As GOP insiders rally to Romney, Perry readies TV ads WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney seems firmly in command in a Republican presidential field that hasn't figured out how to stop him. Twelve weeks before the first party voting, the GOP establishment is coalescing around the for- mer Massachusetts gover- nor. He has more cam- paign experience, money and organization than anyone else. He showed again this week that he's the best debater in the bunch. And President Barack Obama's cam- paign is treating him almost as the presumptive nominee — even though Romney still faces chal- lenges in some early vot- ing states. The biggest question in Republican circles is when and how Texas Gov. Rick Perry will use his own substantial campaign funds to buy TV ads hit- ting Romney's record on health care, abortion, gay rights and job creation. Perry's campaign, which seems best-posi- tioned to challenge Rom- ney, dropped broad hints Wednesday that the moment is near. ''Now that the field is full, the air war will start soon,'' said Katon Daw- son, former chairman of the South Carolina GOP and Perry's top adviser in the state. ''We seem to be inside a 100-day win- dow,'' Dawson said. ''Governor Perry will be extremely competitive on the air.'' The tone is different up the coast in New Hamp- shire. Among rank-and- file Republicans there, even those who favor other candidates have a sense that Romney has gained an air of inevitabil- ity. ''It's very frustrating,'' said state Rep. Jim Wad- dell, of Hampton, who backs former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman. Businesses affected by Hispanic protests of Alabama law ALBERTVILLE, Ala. (AP) — At least a half- dozen poultry plants shut down or scaled back oper- ations Wednesday and many other businesses closed as Hispanics in Alabama skipped work to protest the state's tough- est-in-the-nation immi- gration law. The work stoppage was aimed at demonstrat- ing the economic contri- bution of Alabama's His- panic immigrants. It was unclear exactly how wide- spread the protests were, but a poultry company spokesman said officials were reporting unusually high absences at plants in northeast Alabama, where much of the state's chick- en industry is based. In the northeast Alaba- ma town of Albertville, numerous Hispanic- owned businesses along Main Street had the lights off and signs that said they wouldn't be open. Mexican restaurants, a bank that caters to His- panics, small grocery stores and supermarkets were all shuttered. Jose Contreras owns a restaurant and store on Main Street. He said he was losing about $2,500 in revenue by shutting down. ''We closed because we need to open the eyes of the people who are operating this state,'' said Contreras, originally from the Dominican Republic and a U.S. citizen. ''It's an example of if the law pushes too much, what will happen.'' BlackBerry outage spreads to America NEW YORK (AP) — BlackBerry users across the world were exasperat- ed Wednesday as an out- age of email, messaging and Internet services on the phones spread to the U.S. and Canada and stretched into the third day for Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa. It was the biggest out- age in years for BlackBer- ry users, and strained their relationship with an already tarnished brand. It came on the eve of the launch of a mighty com- petitor — a new iPhone model. Research In Motion Ltd., the Canadian com- pany that makes the phones, said a crucial link in its European infrastruc- ture failed Monday, and a backup didn't work either. The underlying problem has been fixed, but a backlog of emails and messages has built up that the company has yet to work down. Meanwhile, emails and messages from other regions to Europe were piling up in RIM's sys- tems in the rest of the world, like letters clog- ging a mailbox. That caused the outages in the U.S. and Asia, said David Yach, RIM's chief tech- nology officer for soft- ware. At Zenprise Inc., a Fre- mont, Calif., firm that helps companies manage BlackBerrys issued to employees, vice president Ahmed Datoo said emails started piling up on U.S. servers shortly after mid- night. By morning, the congestion was heavy enough at a particular client company to delay all email for BlackBerrys. The pileup started to ease in the afternoon. Florida man charged with hacking email accounts LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Florida man was charged with hacking into celebrity email accounts in a computer invasion scheme that led to the posting of private and revealing informa- tion, including nude photos of actress Scar- lett Johansson, on the Internet, federal author- ities said Wednesday. Christopher Chaney, 35, of Jacksonville, was arrested without inci- dent as part of a year- long investigation of celebrity hacking that authorities dubbed ''Operation Hacker- azzi.'' There were more than 50 victims in the case, including Mila Kunis, Christina Aguilera and actress Renee Olstead, authorities said. Others were named only by ini- tials and investigators wouldn't disclose if they were famous, but said victims named in the indictment agreed to have their identities made public. ''It helps get out the message that cyber- hacking is a real threat,'' U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte said of the case, describing those who engage in such activity as ''scum.'' Chaney made his ini- tial court appearance in a Florida courtroom Wednesday and was released on $10,000 bond. He was charged with 26 counts of identi- ty theft, unauthorized access to a protected computer and wiretap- ping. If convicted, he faces up to 121 years in prison. An email left for Assistant Federal Public Defender Maurice Grant II was not immediately returned. Recycle The Warmth Yes, I can help! Who do you know that needs a coat? Yourself? Children?
