Woman's Improvement Club Disposes of Three Thousand Fat Scones The first regular meeting of the Red Bluff Woman's Improvement Club was held Wednesday afternoon and was largely attended. Mrs. L.L. McCoy, president of the club, presided. One of the most important bits of unfinished business handled at the meeting was the delivery to the club by G.K. and Miss Annie King of the deed to certain lots on Rio street donated by the Kings as a building site for a new clubhouse. — Oct. 13, 1921 Eleanor Fritzell celebrated her 90th birthday Satur- day at the Riverside Restaurant, hosted by her daughters, Eleanor Krail of San Jose and Roberta Skinner of Los Angeles. Sharon Furia from Orland was our Trailboss and she decorated the tables using the autumn theme. She used yellow table clothes, autumn nap- kins, red cups of different candy, with garlands of Planting new and old irises Adapted by KATHY BRAMHALL From California Garden Club's "Garden Patch Pointers" by Robert & Hoberley Schuler Q: When is the best time to divide and re-plant my existing iris rhizomes and plant newly pur- chased irises? How? A: Iris suppliers usually start shipping rhizomes in mid-July. Rhizomes can be planted as soon as they arrive or they can be stored in a cool dry place and planted mid- October into November. For the best selection, purchase the rhi- zomes as soon as they arrive at the nursery. You can have a different vari- ety/type of iris blooming from early spring through as late as Sep- tember in our warmer climate. (More on types of iris in another article.) Some are best if grown separately and some do well mixed with other flowers. Don't hide them in the back row. The Reticulate Irises (bulbous) bloom in early spring, followed by the early Bearded Iris, April and May will include the many colors of the Tall Bearded Iris. This is a good iris to interplant with other perennials. In the fall if they are not crowded, don't divide, just clean up the old leaves. If the bed is crowded or has been there for three years and you are getting fewer flowers, it is time to divide and replant. Plant new or replant old rhi- zomes in clumps of three, four to six inches apart, and each clump 12 to 18 inches apart for best appear- ance. For old irises dig up the entire clump, break or cut off the woody rhizomes furthest from the growing shoot, leave up to three rhizomes for each shoot. Keep the rhizomes that have long healthy roots for re- planting. A rhizome that has pro- duced a bloom stem will not bloom Fritzell celebrates 90 years again—discard it. Cut the rhizomes' roots to about six inches. Like most bulbs, the rhi- zomes store food through the sum- mer from the leaves. Existing leaves should be cut like a fan from the outside to about six inches to the top center leaves. Label if you know the names. Let these new rhizomes air dry 3-4 days. When ready to plant, spread roots facing downward into good garden soil with good drainage. Cover the rhizomes with only 1/2" of soil—do not cover deeper. Wait until spring to fertilize newly planted rhizomes, adding a small handful of bone meal now is helpful. In the spring, before the iris blooms, use 5-10-10 fertilizer. Fer- tilize again after they have bloomed. Water the rhizomes after planting. Planting iris rhizomes is a great project for adults and children. The results are glorious. Fundraising dinner for victims of abuse October is Domestic Abuse Awareness month and this is where you can be a vehicle of change and give someone paralyzed by fear the hope to change, the hope to stop the cycle of abuse. Homes of Hope for VIDA (Victims in Domestic Abuse) is a not-profit organization designed and structured to complement agencies, such as Alterna- tives to Violence and Shasta County Women's Refuge. Homes of Hope will assist in providing transition- al housing for up to two years; job training through organized classes taught by trained volunteers; life skill development such as budgeting, money manage- ment and banking; and other related assistance. Mentors will also assist victims toward establish- ing normalcy in their coping skills; additionally, pro- viding counseling as needed as they transform from victim to victorious. Homes of Hope has been careful not to duplicate other agencies, but rather to complement them. To this end - putting an end to victims in domestic abuse - Homes of Hope is raising funds to construc- tively progress towards the goals of the organization. The group is holding a "Harvest of Hearts" Fundraising Dinner at 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 12 at Red Bluff Community Center, 1500 S. Jackson St. Dinner tickets are $20 per person, $35 per couple, or purchase a whole table of eight for $140. The evening will include a silent auction. Rapture Brass will provide music and the guest speaker is author and speaker Dave Muerer. Another way you can be an agent of change is through your donations. We appreciate your dona- tions for the silent auction. Call Clyde and Carol Brandt at 347-1330 for tickets, donations or questions. Tri-County Sams camped at Lakehead in September autumn leaves down the center of the tables. Sally Watham, who was Sharon's guest at our August Campout, provid- ed small bottles of Embrey Family Farms 100 percent California Olive Oil for each place setting. At our meeting, the members voted to have our meetings after the potlucks instead of in the afternoon, so that we could enjoy the sights of the areas, go fishing or whatever the members wanted to do. Our Oct. 14, 15 and 16 Campout will be held at the Red Bluff RV Park, with Ed and Retta Pereira of Orland as our Trail- bosses. Anyone owning a self- contained RV that would like to go on monthly campouts with a great small group of people are encouraged to call Wagon Master Vic Dickison at 824-3081 or President Richard Sol at 385-1344. We would really like to hear from interested RVers as we are trying to increase our membership. Northern Valley Indian Health, Inc. WE HAVE MOVED!
