OROVILLE The Red Bluff boys and girls basketball teams both won tournaments over the week- end. Both teams saw star play- ers suffer a facial injury, only to return to garner Most Valuable Player awards. The Spartan boys won the Dennis Burnum Memorial Tournament with a 66-61 win over host Oroville in Saturday's championship. It was Red Bluff's second tournament title this season. In what coach Stan Twitch- ell described as a "very physi- cal game" Wyatt Clement was able to establish an early pres- ence inside. Joseph Bosetti, named the tournament's MVP, got his eye cut open taking a charge in the second quarter, but was patched up and returned to score 26 points and 16 rebounds. 10 of those rebounds came on the of- fensive glass. Lane Pritchard and the hot shooting Joey Knight each added 12. KJ Hinkston held Oroville's star player to just six points. Cory Twitchell chipped in with six points. Red Bluff (11-3) earned its trip to the final by making 13 3-pointers against Gridley Fri- day night in a 84-41 win. Bosetti scored 26 in the win, Pritchard had 22 and Knight chipped in with 15. The Spartans won the tour- nament opener Thursday 64-45 over Las Plumas. Bosetti had 25 points and Wy- att Clement 14. Clement and Pritchard each earned All-Tournament honors to join Bosetti. WESTVALLEYNEWYEAR'SHOOPS TOURNAMENT It was almost the same formula for the Lady Spartans as Daisy Brose had her nose busted open, only to return as tournament MVP to lead the Red Bluff girls to a title in Cot- tonwood. The third time was a charm for the Lady Spartans, who had previously lost twice to Shasta. They faced Shasta again in Saturday's championship, fall- ing behind double-digits early before rallying to win 56-51. Allison Wining had 18 points in the final, Katie Gallagher was right behind with 17 and Ste- fanie Brunello added 12. Gallagher and Wining both earned All-Tournament honors. Brose added four points, Ally- son Drury had three and Ashley Exum two points. The Lady Spartans beat the tournament hosts 61-50 in Fri- day's semifinal. Brose returned from hav- ing her nose injured in Friday's game to lead Red Bluff with 17 points. Exum had 12 points and Win- ning added 11 points. Russo TheAssociatedPress ARLINGTON, TEXAS Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 246 yards and four touchdowns and Ohio State won the first na- tional title in college football's playoff era, running over Ore- gon 42-20 Monday night. Elliott scored three straight times in the sec- ond half for the Buckeyes, seeded fourth in the four- team bracket, after the Ducks pulled within a point in the third quarter. The Buckeyes overcame four turnovers to give Urban Meyer his first title in his third season at Ohio State after he won two champion- ships at Florida under the old BCS system. Cardale Jones, who started the season as Ohio State's third-string quarterback, ac- counted for two scores as the Buckeyes won their fifth na- tional championship. Heisman Trophy win- ner Marcus Mariota threw a touchdown pass on the open- ing drive, but couldn't lead the second-seeded Ducks to their first national title. Mariota's season ended without the honor that mat- tered to him most. Going into Monday night's game, the Oregon quarter- back said he would trade the Heisman Trophy he won this season for a national cham- pionship because the team honor was more important to him that any individual award. It is likely that it was Mari- ota's final game at Oregon. He has until Thursday to decide if he'll skip his senior season and declare his eligibility for the NFL draft. By Joseph Shufelberger jshufelberger@chicoer.com @JShufelberger on Twitter CHICO Nick Maximov gave a memorable tournament a mem- orable moment. Maximov managed a two-point takedown with about a second left — or likely even less by the time the referee scored it — in the 182-pound final of the Second Annual Joe Rios Memorial Wres- tling Tournament, giving him a 5-4 victory over Del Oro's Bran- don Jeppson. "I just shot in with all I had in the last 10 seconds to get that two- point takedown," said Maximov, a junior from the host Chico High wrestling team. "I just drove as hard as I can and as fast I can." Maximov's victory came min- utes after teammate and practice partner, John Leal, needed all of 44 seconds to pin Reno's Andrew Berreyesa in the 170 final for con- secutive Chico champions. "Iron sharpens iron," Chico coach Keith Rollins said of his two Panthers who take each other on routinely at practice. Leal not only won the 170 title last year in the inaugural edition of the tournament, but he took home the award for outstanding heavyweight wrestler for the sec- ond straight year. Paradise's Wyatt Wyckoff won his weight class again as well.
