Acollegestudentgift doesn't have to be com- plicated, whether it's for a birthday, graduation or a special occasion. It just needs to be rel- evant and thought- ful. Some of the best gift ideas are surprisingly affordable — as cheap as 10 bucks as I write. The key to selecting a gift for college students is to pick something that 1) they wouldn't normally buy for themselves, 2) fits their current stage of life and needs, and 3) ranks high in cool factor. 1. PHD comics. A col- lection of the first five years of "Piled Higher and Deeper," a comic strip about life or, lack thereof, in graduate school — as it originally appeared in Stanford University's "The Stanford Daily Newspa- per." 2. Sandwich maker. This is a total lifesaver, and works like a champ! It makes a hot, fast breakfast with minimum prep and easy cleaning anywhere, including a dorm room. And it's so cute! 3. Miracle Cube Timer. No more buttons, switches or dials, the Datexx Mir- acle Cube Timer allows you to mange your time with simplicity and con- venience. Set the timer by resting the cube with the desired time facing up — 5, 15, 30 or 60 min- utes. When time's up, a loud alarm rings. Silence by setting it back to zero at the top. 4. Wake-up light. This is an alarm clock like you've never seen. Its "dawn sim- ulator" gradually lights up a room so it feels like you're waking with the sun in a natural sunrise without a loud, annoying alarm. It makes a huge dif- ference in one's quality of sleep and ease in get- ting out of bed, especially during the longer dark months of winter (or thesis writing). Simple to operate and can double as a bed- side lamp. 5. "Visual Miscella- neum." This bestselling book is a great gift for that highly intellectual young person on your gift list, of- fering a colorful guide to the world's most conse- quential trivia. It is a ref- erence book like no other that makes sense of our world by putting the data we are bombarded with every day — health find- ings, technological ad- vances, cultural touch points, war statistics — into creative visual per- spective. 6. Travel coffee mug. If someone on your gift list runs on dark, hot liq- uids, this Zojirushi stain- less-steel coffee mug is the ticket. It's sleek, it's beau- tiful and keeps hot coffee hot for a very long time. The entire thing disassem- bles for thorough cleaning. Accommodates full-size ice cubes for cold drinks, too. Comes in 12-oz and 16-oz sizes with choice of five colors. 7. Travel Power Plug Adapter Charger. You don't have to understand it. Just know that any- one who travels can re- ally use this little gem with 3 international plug adapters covering more than 150 countries. And it's good domestically as well with two USB ports for mobile phones, dig- ital cameras, mp3's, iP- ods, iPhones, etc. And so easy to carry! 8. Laptop table. This FURINNO A6 ultralight adjustable laptop table fea- tures an air-vented design that reduces overheating of your laptop, notebook or tablet. Totally adjustable, this little table will turn a regular desk into a stand- ing desk yet works laid back on the bed. Holds up to 30 pounds but weighs less than five. 9. GoPro. This is a video camera that started a movement. Your 20-some- thing knows all about this and wants the HD HERO3 White Edition, which has wireless connection, re- cords in Full HD to an SDHC memory card and rates as a very high-qual- ity item. 10. PlayStation. Life can't be all books and study. This is the way ev- ery young person likes to kick back and play for a spell. This Borderlands 2 Limited Edition PlaySta- tion Vita Bundle is state of the art and the latest in cool. 11. Bluetooth speaker. The OontZ Angle is the top-rated and most wished-for, ultra-portable wireless bluetooth speaker with better sound, better volume, incredible price. 12. Coffee. Ask any 20-something for the near- est coffee shop and you're sure to be directed to Star- bucks. That's the way it is. A bundle of Starbucks gift cards is what typical col- lege students crave. It's OK. 13. Kindle Fire HDX 7. This latest Kindle Fire reading device is built for work and play. With a beautiful 7-inch HDX dis- play, this ultra-fast, light- weight HDX 7 also comes with improved battery life. 14. Power supply. Enjoy your smartphone, tablet or ebook reader without wor- rying about running out of power. This Skiva Power- Vault A2600 ultra-portable external battery pack is an absolute must for a busy collegiate or anyone with mobile devices. 15. Meals in a mug cook- book. Making a meal in a mug is the perfect solu- tion for solo dining, and it's also a quick and easy option for busy people. The meals from this book are a convenient and bud- get-friendly way to eat de- licious and healthy meals when living in a dorm, traveling in a RV or eating at the office! 16. Laptop computer. The Acer Chromebook 11 makes a great gift for someone who has never had a computer before, or as a second computer to carry back and forth to class. It is inexpensive, has a beautiful display, and oh, the price. Nice. For more info about the products mentioned above please visit www.everyday- cheapskate.com/college- gifts. EVERYDAYCHEAPSKATE 16gi scollegestudentswant Mary Hunt The Alliance for Avia- tion Across America Fri- day commended Mayor Clay Parker of Red Bluff for proclaiming January Gen- eral Aviation Appreciation Month. In California, general aviation contributes more than $18.2 billion to the state's economy. "Mayor Parker's proc- lamation helps highlight the economic benefits and valuable service that gen- eral aviation provides to Red Bluff and the state of California," said Selena Shilad, executive director. "We sincerely thank the mayor and the city of Red Bluff for recognizing this vital industry." Formed in 2007, the al- liance is a non-profit, non- partisan coalition of more than 6,300 individuals rep- resenting businesses, ag- ricultural groups, FBO's, small airports, elected of- ficials, charitable organiza- tions and leading business and aviation groups that support the interest of the general aviation commu- nity across various public policy issues. DECLARATION January named aviation appreciation month California Department of Child Support Service is now accepting child sup- port payments via Money- Gram, which has around 6,200 payment locations in the stare. Parents no longer need to come into a local child support agency to make cash payments. For a $1.99 convenience fee, paid to MoneyGram, payments will arrive to the California State Disbursement Unit in three days. Payments can be made inside 18 retail chains in- cluding Walmart, Raley's, CVS, Advance America, Antelope Liquor & Food, Discoteca Ruiz, and Solano Street Liquor 7 Grocery. To make a payment through MoneyGram, par- ents will need their per- sonal Participant ID Num- ber for their child support account, and group Re- ceive Code 14630 so their payment gets credited properly to their account at the California State Dis- bursement Unit. "MoneyGram is a conve- nient payment option for our customers who would like to pay with cash or who want to take care of paying their child support payment while doing an- other errand in town like grocery shopping," says Tehama County DCSS Di- rector Tonya Moore. It's never been more conve- nient to make a child sup- port payment. The most common method of paying is through income with- holding orders through employers. Payments may also be made by credit card or bank account on- line or by phone, by mail- ing a check or money order to the State Disbursement Unit, or in person at the Te- hama DCSS Office on 1005 Vista Way, Ste. A. Led by Deb Meents, site supervisor of the Tadpoles to Toads Early Head Start Center in Corning, a group of 22 staff members and parents made the trip. "So many of our Early Head Start children be- gan their lives at UC Davis. We wanted to find a way to give back to the amazing staff there and the great work they do," said Meents. The Early Head Start staff delivered the sup- plies, selected from a wish list provided by the medi- cal center, including toys, books and crayons for a variety of ages of children from infant to teens. They also delivered some special request items, including lip balm, which the staff uses to ap- ply to the children's face masks when undergoing anesthesia so they smell a pleasant scent instead of medicine, and bubbles, which are used to assist in removing children's breathing tubes. "My son was born with premature lungs and this is where we were for two weeks. We love the staff and the nurses they re- ally care about the kids. I'm glad to see my home town helping out," said Head Start parent Tanya Ramirez. NCCDI Staff plan to con- tinue their relationship with UC Davis, collecting supplies for another deliv- ery in the spring.
