8A Daily News – Thursday, October 6, 2011 WORLD BRIEFING Senate Dems have idea on paying for jobs bill WASHINGTON (AP) — Struggling to deliver the big jobs package proposed by President Barack Obama, Senate Democrats are using the issue to force Republican senators to vote on tax increases for million- aires, picking up on a White House theme that the nation's wealthiest Ameri- cans aren't paying their fair share. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Wednesday he is changing Obama's jobs package to add a 5 percent tax on income above $1 million, a proposal that is sure to be blocked by Republicans. The $447 billion pack- age still includes Obama's proposals to cut payroll taxes and provide money for teachers, firefighters, the unemployed and infrastruc- ture. The tax on millionaires is expected to pay for the package, so it wouldn't add to the budget deficit. Democrats are banking on Republicans to oppose both the higher taxes on million-dollar earners and the president's call for new spending aimed at reducing joblessness, leaving them C & C PROPERTIES 741 Main Street, Suite #2 Red Bluff, CA 96080 1-800-287-2187 (530) 527-2187 An Independently owned and operated Member of Coldwell Banker Residential Affiliates. ''Republicans will be hard pressed to explain why they allowed teachers and firefighters to be laid off, rather than have million- aires and billionaires pay their fair share,'' said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. ''Republicans will struggle to defend putting off repairs to crumbling schools in order to protect tax breaks for the wealthiest 1 percent of America. This is the con- trast that will be on display in the Senate next week.'' Romney, Perry struggle to nail down nomination WASHINGTON (AP) — With the Chris Christie tease over, Mitt Romney is telling Republican activists there's all the more reason to get excited about his presidential campaign. They will keep him waiting a bit longer, it seems. A handful of major GOP donors jumped into Rom- ney's camp this week after Christie, the New Jersey governor, ruled out a candi- dacy. But many party activists still appear restless, casting about for a conserv- ative alternative and won- dering if Texas Gov. Rick Perry can fill the role despite his shaky debate performances. With caucus and primary voting to start in about three months, Christie's announcement brought the presidential race into sharp- er focus. Republicans say the eventual nominee almost surely will come from the current field. And President Barack Obama, whose liberal base is grumpy, is trying to distin- guish himself more sharply from Republicans in Con- gress and in the presidential contest, sometimes calling them out by name. Polls show that Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, attracts about one-fourth of prospective GOP voters, with the rest looking to Perry, Herman Cain, Ron Paul and others. Romney's backers praise his consistency and stay- the-course discipline. Other party insiders, however, see a stubborn and troubling resistance to his appeal among voters likely to show up in the dead of winter for the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary. Times about Muslims in America. Sheikh Reda Shata was among those singled out for surveillance because of his ''threat potential'' and what the NYPD considered links to organizations associated with terrorism, despite hav- ing never been charged with any crime, according to secret police documents obtained by The Associated Press. This was life in America for Shata: a government partner in the fight against terrorism and a suspect at the same time. During his time at the Islamic Center of Bay Ridge since 2002, he wel- comed FBI agents to his mosque to speak to Mus- lims, invited NYPD officers for breakfast and threw par- ties for officers who were leaving the precinct. As police secretly watched Shata in 2006, he had break- fast and dinner with Bloomberg at Gracie Man- sion and was invited to meet with Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, Shata recalls.
