2A Daily News – Thursday, September 29, 2011 Community people&events Antique Street Faire set for Sunday in Downtown RB Some more hardy summer perennials By CATHY WILSON Our scorching temperatures last week were actually normal for our valley this time of the year. Howev- er, since we have had a temperate summer season, it was difficult, not only for me to tolerate, but also for my plants. Watering and other gar- den chores became much more labor intensive. Living in a hot, windy and sunny climate does not mean that you have to forgo gardening. Make the most of your garden by selecting sun, wind, and heat tolerate plants. Here are some to consider. Lantana is a reliable perennial If you are looking for a unique or vintage item, you should plan to attend the 20th annual Red Bluff Antique Street Faire on from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, in downtown Red Bluff. Promoters Kathy Patterson and Linda Durrer of Red Bluff Rotary, Sunrise, promise a day filled with deli- cious food and rare antiques and collectibles. There will be dealers from all over California and Oregon filling up Washington and Pine streets. John Humphries will be on hand to appraise items for only $5 each. This event is an antique lover's dream. There is no admission for the event. An added attraction this year will be a vintage High- way Patrol vehicle with an officer in full 1920's attire who will be available to answer questions and for photo opportunities. It is a fast growing American native with many tiny flowers forming larger clusters. I particularly like the Patri- ot series. They have multicolored flowers in different colored combi- nations of purple, orange, pink, red and yellow. I recently planted 'Camara Irene' which has clusters in lemon yellow and majenta. It is very happy among its neighbors in the full hot sun. Salvia 'Mystic Spires Blue' is a wonderful sun loving plant just 18 inches tall. It is a very compact ver- sion of 'Indigo Spires' and is easier to grow and blooms more heavily. It has gorgeous dark blue flower spikes. Gaura lindheimeri 'Belleza Compact Light Pink' is another compact perennial which grows only 12 inches tall. It is terrific planted in containers or in the ground. It pairs nicely with "Rasp- berry Swirl' dianthus. The 'Superbelles' Calibrachoa may not always tolerate our winters but usually survives if planted in a container and placed in a protected area. It is a fast grower coming in many bright colors of purple,yel- low, white, red and pink. It spills beautifully forming a draping matt. The 'Superbelles' are "stunners" in a pot or window box.
