Oroville: 0-4; last week lost to Pleasant Valley 27-19. Last Year 2010: Corning 39, Oroville 21— In their first meeting since 2003, the Cardinals racked up 394 rushing yards on the road. Oroville turned the ball over four times in the first half and Corning converted three of them into scores. The Tigers rallied back in the second half to pull within 25- 21, before Corning's rushing game took over. J.D. Whited finished with 169 yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Holland added 109 yards and two scores and Tyler McIntyre also scored. Holland and John Lowe made interceptions for Corning and Dennis Womack and Roy Madrigal recovered fumbles. Oroville was led by receiver Keith Johnson, who caught three balls for 130 yards and a touchdown from Alex Klein. Klein also threw a touchdown to Ben Archuleta. Tigers' Scouting Report 7 p.m. 7 p.m. Oroville has dropped 21 consecutive games and hasn't beaten a team other than Las Plumas since 2007 — a run of 39 games against non Thun- derbird-named opponents. They run the Wing-T offense and their offensive line strength is on the left behind lineman Jacob Scholl and Brandon Giles. Jacob Thorton, Baku Jones and Johnny Graves split carries rather evenly behind them. Dane Dugan runs the offense, he's 10-for-30 passing for 188 yards with a touchdown and seven interceptions. His primary receiving options are Justin York and John Goble. On defense, Oroville is led by Jones and Graves. This year's Oroville team is showing improvement, but if Corning holds onto the football the Cardinals should rebound from last week's loss at Shasta and have a happy homecoming — something the Tigers have seen opponents have a lot of in recent years. Warriors Mercy Butte Valley Bulldogs Friday 7 p.m. Mercy: 1-2; last week lost to Redding Christian 36-14. Butte Valley: 3-0; last week beat Big Valley 51-0 3:30 p.m. Last Year Regular season: Butte Valley 66, Mercy 36— The Bulldogs made too many big plays for Mercy to keep up as Jeremy Lopez scored seven touchdowns. Mitchell Lopez rushed for 216 yards for Mercy and Royce Crane had 171. Division-VI Semifinal, Mercy 22, Butte Valley 30 — The Warriors were down 24-0 at halftime and rallied back to make it 24-22, but couldn't get any closer on a snowy field in November. Bulldogs' Scouting Report Last year's 8-man runner-up, the Bulldogs may be the favorites to win the section championship this season. Their defense has allowed just 26 points through three games. Mercy has only scored 28 points in 2 games. Friday 7:30 p.m. Spartans Red Bluff West Valley Eagles 3 6 3 0 Sports Last 3 Meetings 2010: West Valley 28, Red Bluff 6 — Red Bluff turned the ball over five times and had four illegal substitution penal- ties off of game restarts. Ty Smith caught seven passes for 50 yards. Cody Case threw for 128 yards and punched in a 1- yard keeper for the Spartans' score. Josh Bocker led the Eagles with 128 rushing yards 2009: Red Bluff 17, West Valley 14 — Trailing 14-3 at the start of the fourth quarter the Spartans rallied to win their season opener behind a pair of touchdowns by Zack Schwabauer. The Spartans' defense preserved the win with a goal line stand in the waning minutes of the game. Schwabauer carried 37 times for 240 yards and Trevor Gip- son had a 21-yard field goal. Jason Vossoughi and Taylor Wilson had sacks. 2008: West Valley 34, Red Bluff 21 — The Eagles returned the second half kickoff. Then scored again when Red Bluff fumbled on the ensuing drive and the Spartans found them- selves in a 27-7 hole they couldn't climb out of. Collin Ramirez passed for 174 yards and two touchdowns to Cole McKenzie, who had 137 receiving yards. West Valley rushed for 303 yards. Jesse Foss and Corey Carpenter had sacks for Red Bluff. Eagles' Scouting Report After setting a school record by scoring 78 points against McKinleyville, West Valley had a bye week before entering this game against a Red Bluff team that just allowed 62 points. The Eagles were bumped up to Division-I this season and so far have fared well considering their two losses came against Enterprise and Sutter. Part of that success is returning quarterback Luke Wright, who has allowed the Eagles to throw the ball more than they have in the past. His primary options are possession receiver Hunter Dyche and deep threat Colton Strickland. That's not to say West Valley has forgotten how to run the ball. Sophomore Austin Clark scored five touchdowns against McKinleyville. He shares carries with John Hollmer and the Eagles' primary running back Josh Bocker. West Valley switched to a 3-5 defense this year to take advantage of their deep linebacking group led by Austin Lob- singer. He gets plenty of help from Clark and Jesse Robbins. Forrist Parks is the one to watch on the defensive line. The Eagles have been very strong at stuffing the run this season. Their kick coverage has been questionable at times. Slow start, strong finish VOLLEYBALL Chester 0 Mercy 3 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor The Lady Warriors dropped the first six points, Wednesday night. It didn't matter. Mercy rallied back to snatch Game 1 then pounded the visiting Chester Volcanoes in a 29-27, 25- 20, 25-18 victory. The Lady Warriors trailed by as much as 11-4 in Game 1, before they settled down under the service of Morgan Hampton-Glines. After a Breanna Kemp kill, a Maggie Keller point at the net and a couple of Chester errors, the Lady Warriors found themselves trailing by just a point at 11-10. Chester would again take control of the opening game late and held a 23-19 lead, before Kayce Kemp tipped a ball over for a crucial side out. Hampton-Glines and Keller fol- lowed with Mercy points and then Kayce Kemp served up an ace to make it 23-23. Mercy and Chester traded off points from there with Breana Kemp getting a couple of clutch points for Mercy. The Lady Warriors then served 1B Thursday September 29, 2011 Week 5 Football Preview Friday 7:30 p.m. Red Bluff: 0-4; last week lost to Chico 62-28. Chester rallied back to make it 22-18, but Keller re-entered the game and gave Mercy one more thunderous kill as the Warriors held on to win 24-18.
