Cellist Rebecca Rust and bassoonist Friedrich Edelmann, joined by pianist Vera Breheda, are going to play masterpieces by G.F. Handel, Felix Mendelssohn, Sergej Prokofjew, an interesting ragtime by american com- poser Arthur Fracken- pohl, and other pieces. Rust and Edelmann join us after returning from Japan where they performed several post- tsunami benefit concerts and performed at a private musical evening with the Emperor and Empress of Japan. Non- Arts & entertainment Mozart Mile symphony fundraiser Sunday The 33rd Annual Mozart Mile starts at 7:30 a.m. on Sun- day, Oct. 2, at the One-Mile Recreation Area in Bidwell Park. The event will bring live musicians and runners together in a 5K run or 1-mile walk to benefit the North State Sym- phony (NSS) and other local organizations. Gospel jazz concert set for Oct. 8 Sacramento area Jazz pianist Jim Martinez will present "Praise Him With Jazz!" on Saturday, Oct 8. Concert starts at 6 p.m. at Presbyterian Church of Red Bluff, 838 Jefferson St., Red Bluff. Tickets are $10 for general admission, available by calling (530) 527-0372. A classically-trained pianist based near Sacra- mento, Martinez has per- formed or recorded with notables like Lionel Hampton, the Stan Kenton Band, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Christian McBride, Benny Golson, Roy Hargrove, and Ed Thigpen, who was the first drummer with the Oscar Peterson Trio. Martinez has worked as pianist and musical director for Joan Rivers and Bob Newhart, and he was recently named to the International Artist us to work with all these other folks," said NSS Executive Director Keith Herritt. "It's turning into a real celebration of all the arts in Chico." The Symphony is partnering with performers who include members of the Chico Community Ballet; Music Teachers' Youth Orchestra; the Ink Blot Arts theatre group from CSU, Chico; several smaller ensembles of local musi- cians including guitarist Warren Haskell; the Chico Ukulele Group; bagpiper Elizabeth Quivey and others. Chico Friends of the Library, and the National Charity League, will be helping out at the Mozart Mile as well as chiropractor Dr. Paula Barros, offering head-and-neck mas- sages. For entertainment, walkers will be able to observe a group of Avenue Nine Gallery landscape "plein air" painters as they create their rustic scenes. Each year a collectable T-shirt is available featuring a picture of a different musical instrument. This year, the instrument pictured is a grand piano, in honor of Sym- phony soloist Diane Walsh who will be playing Beethoven's Fourth Concerto with the orchestra on Sept 24 and 25. Into the Woods A production of Into The Woods will be presented Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Laxson Auditorium a California State University, Chico. The Brothers Grimm "Go Broadway" in a cockeyed fairytale presented by Chico Performances and Blue Room Junior. This performance of Into The Woods is a "funny and engaging way to help young people think about the stories they've grown up with and the ethical issues raised by them," said Daran Goodsell, Marketing Coordinator for Chico Performances. Martinez and Didier have also co-developed a Jazz concert titled "A Trib- ute to the Music of Doris Day", with performances scheduled nationally. Their tribute is the only one endorsed by Ms. Day. Jim and Laura have also been the only artists cho- sen to entertain at her Carmel, CA hotel, The Cypress Inn, for her annual birthday celebration on April 3. This concert will fea- ture Martinez's unique arrangements like "Amaz- ing Grace" ala Dave Brubeck's "Take Five", "Nothing But the Blood" ala "Linus & Lucy" from the Charlie Brown animat- ed specials and a Bossa- Nova version of "Holy, Holy, Holy". Chico State's Theatre Department opens its 2011-12 sea- son with the laugh-out-loud Broadway musical, "Little Shop of Horrors," a grand-scale production that features a flesh-eating plant, do-wop and pop music, and a man who gets more than he bargains for. "Little Shop of Horrors," directed by Joel P. Rogers, will have evening performances in Harlen Adams Theatre beginning at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 through Oct. 8; and Oct. 13 through Oct. 15. Matinee shows take place at 2 p.m., Oct. 9 and Oct. 16.
