StaffReports Whitney Armstrong earned best offense and coach's award honors for her performance for her school. Armstrong was coached by Teresa Lamb. She said her team always fought hard and never became discour- aged. Armstrong credits her coach for push- ing her to do her best. Armstrong sa id her teammates pushed each other to make sure everyone was doing what they were supposed to be doing. She said she hopes to have more successful seasons at Corning High School in both basketball and field hockey. Armstrong said she wants to step into a leadership role in the up- coming year. FIELDHOCKEY WhitneyArmstrong JunioratCorningHighSchool Armstrong Staff Reports Julia Brandt was named to the All-Northern Section 1st Team following third place finishes in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Breaststroke at the Mas- ters. During the season Brandt broke school records in the 200 IM (2:19.41), 200 F r e e s t y l e (2:05), 100 Breaststroke (1:12.62) and 100 Free- style (55.75). Brandt was coached by Marty Bo- setti and Kathy Brandt. She credits her teachers, parents and club coaches Barry Hender- son, Randy Teeters and Al- ice Teeters with her success. This winter Brandt will play basketball. Her goal next year is to break school re- cords in the 100 Backstroke and 500 Freestyle. GIRLS SWIMMING Julia Brandt Sophomore at Red Bluff High School Brandt Staff Reports Sofia Frantz helped lead Red Bluff to its first sec- tion title in girls golf, along the way earning the North- ern Section's individual ti- tle for herself by shooting a career best 83 at the finals. She was also named to the a ll-leag ue team. Frantz was coached by Elena To- masetti and also cred- its Sean Rix and Jeff Phelps for her suc- cess. Frantz will be com- peting on the alpine snow- boarding team in the winter. She says she has received offers to play golf in college on both the west and east coasts. GOLF Sofia Frantz Senior at Red Bluff High School Frantz Staff Reports Chance Nelson rushed for 1,189 yards and 17 touchdowns this year. He also notched 244 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns in Corning's run to the playoffs. He was coached by John Studer. Nelson cred- its his team- mates, Alex Davila and Wyatt Hay- don, Corn- ing's line- men and his team's coaches for his success. He said the Car- dinals never gave up on the field regardless of the po- sition they were in. Nelson said he's undecided on the school he wants to attend after he graduates, but his goal is to keep playing foot- ball. FOOTBALL Chance Nelson Senior at Corning High School Nelson Staff Reports Naomi Renfroe quali- fied for the State Champi- onships after placing fifth at the Northern Section fi- nals with a time of 20:26. Renfroe represented Red Bluff with a 155th place fin- ish at states, coming in at a time of 21:23. She was coached be Wes Hen- dricks. Ren- froe thanks her mother and sisters Natalie and Ni- cole along with coaches Hendricks and Rebol for her success. Renfroe will play basketball in the win- ter and runs track in the spring. Her goal for track is to get her mile time down to 5:30. GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY Naomi Renfroe Sophomore at Red Bluff High School Renfroe AthletesoftheFallSeason Staff Reports Cesar Rios was the sole qualifier from his team for the CIF State Cross Coun- try Championships in No- vember. Earlier in the year, Rios earned a second-place finish in the 2-mile event at the Bill Springhorn Classic with a time of 11:28.50. Rios was coached by Kate An- derton. Rios credits An- derton for motivating him, and his teammates, Erik Rios and Joel Aguilar, for push- ing him to become faster. Rios will continue to per- form for his school's cross country and track and field teams, and his goal is to be- come the fastest runner by his junior year. BOYS CROSS COUNTRY Cesar Rios Freshman at Corning High School Rios Staff Reports Mitchell Sauve saved his best for last, putting up personal best times in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Breaststroke at the Northern Section Masters. He placed fourth in the 200 IM and eighth in the backstroke and earned a second team All- Nor t her n Section nod as a result. Sauve was c o a c h e d by Kathy Brandt and Marty Bosetti. He also credits club coach Barry Henderson with his success. Sauve hopes to im- prove upon his times next year to move into the Top 3 of the 200 IM by the 2015 Masters and make the First Team. BOYS SWIMMING Mitchell Sauve Sophomore at Red Bluff High School Sauve Staff Reports Ginger Shaffer finished third in the Northern Sec- tion and Eastern Athletic- Sacramento River League. She partnered with Ais- lyn Lair for a third place doubles finish. She was c o a c h e d by Dennis Pouton and thanks her family and R i c h a r d Hernandez for her suc- cess on and off the tennis courts. Shaf- fer, who won a league title in 2013, said her goal for next season is to return to being the top player in the league. TENNIS Ginger Shaffer Junior at Red Bluff High School Shaffer Staff Reports Marissa Starman led Mercy to a 25-13 record and a trip to the Division VI semifinals. Starman re- corded 228 kills, 34 aces, 55 blocks and 305 digs. She was named the Five Star League's Most Valu- able Player and earned a trip to a r e g i o n a l a l l - s t a r game. Star- man was coached by Zane Zelei and thanks Candi Keller, her parents and her teachers for suc- cess on and off the court. Starman is also a standout in basketball and plans to run track in the spring. She would like to attend a four- year university and earn a major in psychology with a minor in criminology.
