The Frantz twins are re- ceiving offers to continue their golfing career at the collegiate level. Along with seniors Maryn Spangler and Molly Shea they will receive the Top of the State golf schol- arship. Other Lady Spartans on the team included Emilie Louisell, Autumn Poole, Yazmin Villalobos, Abbie Famborough, Izzy Seera and Monse Saucedo. It was just five years ago that Tomasetti noticed there was a stipend for a girls golf coach, but yet there wasn't a team. When Tomasetti first noticed the stipend, but lack of a team, she asked her athletic director why that was. She was told there wasn't enough interest to field a team. "I took that as a chal- lenge to show that there were girls at Red Bluff High School who could and could play golf," Tomasetti said. Slowly, but surely Toma- setti build a team that be- gan to compete for league titles and eventually clicked at the right time at the right place to earn a section championship. In their first year the Lady Spartans placed fifth out of seven teams in their league. "I will look at that sec- tion banner hanging in the large gym and know that I did my part for women in golf," Tomasetti said. Golfers FROM PAGE 1 ing two touchdown passes during the season. Add to that another 386 kicking return yards and a reliable hands on punt cov- erage. How consistent was Nel- son? He scored a touchdown in 10 out of 11 games, in- cluding at least two scores in the final five games of the season. Coach John Studer said Nelson was asked to learn multiple positions on of- fense and did so, knowing it would help the team. Nelson would have been in the talks for Athlete of the Fall with just his offen- sive numbers, but he was a standout on the other side of the ball as well. A preseason All-Section defensive selection by Max- Preps, Nelson was second on his team with 74 tack- les. He had three intercep- tions and a fumble recov- ery. But Nelson also did one more thing for his team. He was Corning's punter - and a good one at that. Nelson's 37.7 yards per punt was fourth best in the Northern Section. If it sounds like Nelson was always on the field, that's a good assumption. Following a long drive, sometimes Nelson would come over to the sideline and put a finger up in the air. "He'd hold one finger up," Studer said. "I could see in his eyes he was to- tally exhaustive. He felt guilty to ask for one play off, but he knew his body needed it." Studer said every time that happened, Nelson was running back on to the field before he could ask his young workhorse if he needed a longer break. One time, Studer said, and only one time, Nelson held his finger up for a sec- ond consecutive play off. Perhaps that's why while Nelson racked up the stats, it never felt like they mat- tered to him. He didn't take much time to bask in his own glory, he was too busy do- ing everything he could to help Corning Union win football games. "There's just so much competitive drive in him to just want to do the best for his team, show the best for himself," Studer said. Nelson FROM PAGE 1 ANDY MANIS — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Former Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen was introduced at the head coach at Oregon State on Friday. By Anne M. Peterson TheAssociatedPress CORVALLIS,ORE. Gary An- dersen said his decision to leave Wisconsin after just two seasons for the job at Oregon State came down to fit. "There's no doubt that this is where I'm supposed to be," Andersen said as he was introduced as the new head coach of the Beavers on Friday. Andersen replaces Mike Riley, who surprisingly left Oregon State for Nebraska last week. It was equally surprising when Andersen told his team on Wednes- day that he was leaving Wisconsin. The Badgers have gone 10-3 this season and are headed to the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1 against Au- burn. Wisconsin athletic director and former coach Barry Alvarez will lead the Badgers in their bowl game. Alvarez has said he was taken aback by Andersen's decision. He said Andersen left for personal reasons, but also said Andersen had some issues with Wiscon- sin's admission standards and felt like it made re- cruiting more difficult. "Barry Alvarez is a hall of fame coach and a hall of fame AD," Andersen said in response. "There's no ill feelings, there's no issues for me. I simply saw an op- portunity at Oregon State." Riley left the Pac-12's Beavers to accept the Ne- braska job after the dis- missal of Bo Pelini. Oregon State finished this season 5-7 and out of the postsea- son picture. Riley was known for his pro-style offense, most re- cently utilizing the talents of prolific senior quarter- back Sean Mannion. He also had a track record of producing successful NFL players. Andersen, known as a hard-nosed coach, will shakethingsup, sayinghe'll introduce a "wide open of- fense that will play at pace" and stretch the field. "It's a great move for my family for a lot of reasons," Andersen said.
