ByRichGreene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter RED BLUFF The Mercy Lady Warriors used a full team effort Tuesday to beat Westwood 25- 18, 21-25, 25-29, 25-22 in their Northern Section Division VI quarterfinal match. Mercy (24-12) plays Thurs- day against either top seed Fall River or No. 9 Redding Chris- tian. Marissa Starman got Mercy off to a strong start in Game 1. The Lady Warriors blew the game open late behind kills from Caitlyn Safford and Mad- eline Flynn. A Starman ace capped the game 25-18. Westwood battled back to tie the match 1-1 taking Game 2 25- 21. Mercy grabbed Game 3 25- 19 and it appeared as if West- wood would once again tie the match up. Westwood had a late 20-15 lead, but Mercy began chipping away at the lead. Behind the service of Safford and strong net play by Flynn, Mercy closed to 21-21. Two more kills by Flynn, who finished with 12 kills and three blocks, gave Mercy match point, which the Lady Warriors didn't waste. "I think (Flynn) just gets re- ally excited toward the end and it shows," Mercy coach Zane Zelei said. Tasha Pimentel finished with 40 assists. Gillie Coelho had seven digs, many coming at key times for the Lady Warriors. "We worked on serve-re- ceive all week long and it showed, obviously. We serve- received probably 80 percent and that's pretty darn good," Zelei said. By Curtis Pashelka Bay Area News Group BUFFALO, N.Y. The San Jose Sharks had two goals disallowed Tuesday night, as their seven- game road trip ended with a for- gettable 4-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center. Patrick Marleau had a goal overturned with less than five minutes left in the third period, as replay officials ruled that his shot that rolled off Sabres goalie Jhonas Enroth did not fully cross the goal line. In the first period, with the Sharks killing a penalty to Adam Burish, Matt Nieto and Justin Braun came on a 2-on- 1, and Nieto was able to direct the puck past Michal Neuvirth. But officials ruled that Braun made incidental contact with the goalie and the goal was dis- allowed. It all came on another frus- trating night against the Sa- bres, who extended their win- ning streak against the Sharks to eight games, dating back to Jan. 23, 2010. The Sharks finished their road trip 3-4, and ended a difficult first quarter of the sea- son with an 8-6-2 record. In the second period with the game tied 1-1, Brian Gionta scored from a sharp angle, beat- ing Sharks goalie Troy Grosenick with 8:06 left. By Josh Dubow The Associated Press ALAMEDA Ever since Al Davis arrived in Oakland more than a half-century ago to build his beloved Raiders into one of pro sports' most successful fran- chises, his team has been closely associated with Davis' favorite saying, "Just win, baby." That mantra has now turned into a desperate plea. The Raiders have become the 13th team in pro football history to lose 16 straight games following last weekend's defeat in San Diego and are six games away from a defeated sea- son. "We hate it," safety Charles Woodson said. "We hate that that's even in the minds of our fans. Does it weigh on us? No, I don't think it weighs on us. Just losing games is what weighs on us. We're not worried about we're 0-and-whatever. We're just tired of losing games. We have to find a way to win." That hasn't happened since Matt McGloin led Oakland past Houston 28-23 on Nov. 17, 2013. "Chop the Tree," one banner reads. "Beat Stanford," another pro- claims. With the Bay Area's teams heading in opposite directions, the Big Game has a different feel this year because, well, it's actu- ally a big game for both teams. Stanford is no longer the pow- erhouse it has been in recent years, and Cal is returning to rele- vance in Sonny Dykes' second sea- son as coach. Both enter Satur- day's 117th meeting at Memorial Stadium with .500 records and a chance to become bowl-eligible. "You just look at our program now from where it was a year ago, a lot of the negativity has slowly gone away," Dykes said Tuesday. "We bottomed out last year. I think we're in a much more con- ducive place right now than we were a year ago."
