ByLindaDeutsch TheAssociatedPress CORCORAN » Mass murderer Charles Manson has gotten a li- cense to marry a 26-year-old woman who visits him in prison. The marriage license obtained Monday by The Associated Press was issued Nov. 7 for the 80-year- old Manson and Afton Elaine Burton, who left her Midwestern home nine years ago and moved to Corcoran — the site of the prison — to be near Manson. She maintains several websites advo- cating for Manson's innocence. The license does not specify a wedding date and indicates the couple has 90 days to get married or they will have to reapply. Burton, who goes by the name "Star," told the AP that she and Manson will be married next month. "Y'all can know that it's true," MASS MURDERER MATRIMONY? The Tehama County Health Services Agency was awarded the grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the Na- tional Highway Traffic Safety Ad- ministration. As a component of the grant, the agency will also train and certify car seat technicians and instructors throughout Tehama County. This grant will fund car seats, inspections, bike, scooter and skateboard helmets, reflectors and program staff. There will be at least two car seat check-up events, monthly car seat classes and one bike rodeo. These events will provide ed- ucational opportunities to com- munity members, as well as the proper equipment to stay safe. Bealer, who is charged with the February 2013 murder of 14-year- old Marysa Nichols, was in court for a hearing on where his trial will be moved to after his defense team was granted a change of venue earlier this month. As Judge John Garaventa be- gan to set a date for a future hear- ing to decide between Yuba and Sacramento counties, Bealer, who was seated in the jury box with his arms and legs both shackled began to speak. "I've been patient enough," Bealer said. Garaventa warned Bealer about the implications of him speaking instead of his attorney, to which Bealer replied Garaventa was the one he wanted to speak with. "I've put up enough time in my life for something I haven't done," Bealer said. Bealer then began to use vul- garities and challenged District Attorney Gregg Cohen to start the trial. "Let's go. Let's play," Bealer said. Tehama County Sheriff's De- partment staff escorted Bealer, who had his hair pulled back in a ponytail, from the courtroom. Bealer kept yelling, directing obscenities at Cohen, and calling him a joke. "(It's) not my DNA on that kid's body," Bealer said. With Bealer removed, Gara- venta set a 9 a.m. Dec. 1 hear- ing to decide on where the trial should be moved to. Garaventa said Yuba and Sac- ramento were the two counties to say they were willing to accept the transfer. Cohen said he needed more time to make contact with each court's victim-witness advocate departments. The clubs, which included Crossroads Tehama County, United Bikers of Northern Cal- ifornia and Vagos Motorcycle Club, participated in the kick off of the third annual Christ- mas for a Cause gift drive held at the Gold Exchange here. The drive benefits area nonprofit organizations and food banks. Crossroads Tehama County members regularly donate bi- cycles, toys, clothing and food to the annual gift drive, said Greg Gaidzik, president of the motorcycle club. "We do it because it feels good to do it," Gaidzik said. "We don't have to do this, but most people that are involved in our club have been in this position at one time or another in their life on their own — that's why we're named Cross- roads." The gift drive, which runs to Dec. 13, aims to aid local food pantries and organiza- tions such as the Poor and the Homeless Tehama County, Al- ternatives to Violence and Care Net Pregnancy Center, to name a few. Larry Mikkelsen, president of the Tehama County chapter of United Bikers of Northern California, a nonprofit organi- zation itself, said giving to the gift drive is personal. "It's like paying it forward," said Mikkelsen, 73, of Rancho Tehama. "I've had help years ago, and now it's my turn to help somebody else."
